    3. Sharon, I have a Dicey who became a widow in 1821 when her husband William M Smith died. She was in Franklin Co. after that, with a young daughter, according to court records. Could this be your Dicey by chance? Maybe she married Middleton, then Pickering? I have searched and cannot find Dicey Smith in early records. Thanks, Barb ----- Original Message ----- From: Sharon Nottingham <nottsranch@hotmail.com> To: <MSFRANKL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 30, 2001 6:22 PM Subject: [MSFRANKL-L] Stephen Middleton > Posted on: Franklin Co. Ms Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Franklin/10822 Surname: Chapman ------------------------- You will be happy with your experience researching in both the library and court house in Franklin County. Your reception will be a lot better than if you were researching in Jefferson County. Jo Porter, who is the librarian, is always most cheerful and helpful. Mrs. Thornton and the other folks in the court house are gracious and helpful too. They will help you find what they have. However, it should be realized that there was a court house fire around 1875 and some of the Deed books and other data before that time don't exist. There is not much in the way of places to stay or places to eat in Franklin County. Bude, three miles from Meadville, has the only restaurant and the only motel in the county. Better accomodations are available in Natchez about 30 miles away. Also, some of the court house records were filmed by the Mormons and the films are available through their Family History Library.

    1. Re: [MSFRANKL-L] Butler Family in Franklin Co., MS
    2. There were a couple of periods of time in Franklin County when marriages were not recorded. These were from 1809 when Franklin County was formed from Adams County to April 10, 1818 and from June 1, 1826 to August 29, 1832. Perhaps the Margaret J. Magee who married Zachariah Butler was the widow of Samuel J. Magee shown in the 1850 FC census. If so, she was Margaret J. Gregg (age 31 at the time of the 1850 census). Her date of marriage to Samuel J. Magee was 28 Nov 1839.

    2. Lester Parks
    3. Posted on: Franklin Co. Ms Queries Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ms/Franklin/10811 Surname: Butler, Magee, Godbold ------------------------- The book, "A Partial Genealogy of John Godbold of South Carolina" by John Mesick, Col. USA, Ret'd., lists the marriage of Zackariah A. Butler to Mary E. Godbold, b. 1816 - Fairfield, SC, d/o Levi Godbold and Winnifred Knighton. The book also shows that Mary came to Mississippi in 1826 and received deed to slaves and land, 30 Oct 1838. Levi Godbold and Winnifred Knighton, both died 1868 in McCall Creek, Franklin Co., MS. It appears that Zackariah A. Butler and Mary E. Godbold were married in Mississippi, as she was only 10 yrs. old at the time here family came to MS. However, I have not been able to find a record of this marriage. On 25 Oct 1861, in Franklin Co., MS, there was a marriage between a Zackariah Butler and Margaret J. Magee. The 1870 Census for Franklin Co., MS, shows a Z. Butler, 60 - Farmer and Margaret J., 53 - keeping house, in the same household. Therefore Zackariah would have been born Abt 1810 and Margaret J., abt 1817, which implies that this is probably not the 1st marriage for Margaret J. Magee; which would imply that her maiden name was not Magee, but that she had married a Magee. Butler that married Mary E. Godbold, is s/o William Aaron Butler Jr and Mary Day., who was born abt 1810 in GA. Zackariah and Mary E. had a son, Thomas H. Butler, (1836 - 1876). I would like to correspond with anyone that has information on this family.
