Tom, I have a Dicy Smith from an earlier generation that yours. She was also from Franklin Co. Between 1815-21, she married William M Smith of Catahoula Parish, LA, and lived there until his death in 1821. Then she went to Franklin Co,MS. I am searching for her maiden name and whether or not she and WMSmith had children. Was your Dicy's mother called Dicy? I have always thought it was a nickname. Would appreciate any help. Several Franklin Co. people went to Catahoula Parish,LA: some Kings,Longs,Picketts, for instance. And Louisa Guice married Thomas Gilbert and lived in Catahoula, then Franklin Parish, where some of the other Guices had settled. Harriet Perry,niece of several King brothers, married Zachariah T.Kirkland and lived in Catahoula. My Dicy, second wife of William M Smith, left Catahoula ca 1822 and went BACK to Franklin Co. Both parents die, by or before 22 October 1864 in Claiborne Parish, LA The children must have tutors [guardians] Jefferson W. Cook seeks and is given Guardianship of these minor children, and James M Cook is Under Tutor [Guardian]. Jefferson W. Cook dies on August 11, 1868. James M. Cook, (Bienville Parish, LA) seeks and is given Guardianship of these minor children, with Pleasant R. Beard, Under Tutor. James M Cook states that he is their nearest relative and he is appointed with-out bond. He also states that although the children do not have interest in any property in Louisiana, they probably do in Mississippi. Ed & Sandi, You need to have to have a General Highway Map of Franklin County to understand how it is set out and to know specifically where each Section in each Township and Range is. I have one so its easy for me, but understandably difficult for anyone without it. Franklin County is layed out from the Adams County line to the East to West where it connects to Lincoln County with five equidistant Ranges plus a segment of a Range. Make believe that these are imaginary vertical lines drawn from north to the south. Thus, beginning from East to West they are called: Range 1 East (R1E), Range 2 East (R2E), Range 3 East (R3E), Range 4 East (R4E), Range 5 East (R5E), and lastly the very small segment of Range 6 East (R6E). Next we will slice Franklin County into three horizontal layers. The bottom layer we will call Township 5 North (T5N), the middle layer we be called Township 6 North (T6N), and the top layer will be called Township 7 North (T7N). This basically gives us a series of rectangles and within each rectangle there are a series of sections. To know where a parcel of land is located one must know the Township, Range and Section. (At this scale it is impossible for me to show the Sections, but at least the following map shows what I have been trying to expain.)
