Ms Queries Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ms/Franklin/10872 Surname: BYRD, CAIN, COOK, CUPIT, JONES, HUNT, LEE, MAGEE, RANDOLPH, SUTTON, WILSON ------------------------- In a previously posting on this forum, I requested information regarding the identity of Rebecca LEE and Sutton BYRD, who married on 25 Apr 1837 in Franklin Co., MS. I now believe that I have identified Rebecca. To solicit additional comments, and as general information for those interested, I am posting my analysis. A) James LEE, (12 May 1789, Sumter Co., SC - Bef 22 Aug 1832), married Rebecca SCOTT (14 Aug 1796, NC - ), on 27 Apr 1824, in Franklin Co., MS. They had a son, Goshen Lee (27 Dec 1830 - 9 Dec 1863) who married Elizabeth Jones, 28 Jul 1853. B) A Sutton BYRD married Mary BYRD, d/o Oshea Byrd and Elizabeth LEE. Oshea was s/o Sutton BYRD & Margaret RANDOLPH, and a brother to Eden BYRD, who married Ann LEE. C) A Sutton BYRD married Rebecca LEE on 25 Apr 1837 in Franklin Co., MS. The web site listed below, states that this is the same Sutton BYRD who married Mary BYRD. (I will post additional information on Sutton BYRD in the next several days.) D) The 1850 Census for Franklin Co., MS, taken from the web site, http://searches1.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/archives/ms/amite/misc/cain/cain241.txt, shows the following "... 1850 Fr.Co. #437 Sutton Byrd 60 m N.C.; Rebecca 53 N.C., Edward 25 MS; Ann 18 f MS; Duncan 17; Rebecca 9 f; Goshen Lee 19 m MS. ..." >From the above; 1) Sutton BYRD would have been born abt 1790 in NC. 2) A Goshen LEE, age 19, was in the household of Sutton and Rebecca BYRD. This would appear to be the same Goshen LEE, b. 27 Dec 1830, who was s/o James LEE and Rebecca SCOTT. 3) Rebecca, age 53, coincides with Rebecca SCOTT, b. 14 Aug 1796, who was widow of James LEE. James LEE died abt 1832, which is before the Marriage of Sutton BYRD to Rebecca LEE, which was 25 Apr 1837. 4) I don't know the DOD of Mary BYRD, w/o Sutton BYRD; however, their last child, according to my records, was Duncan BYRD (14 Dec 1832 - 8 Nov 1913), who married Caroline M. HUNT, 3 May 1856). I also show that Duncan BYRD married a Frances E. Sutton. This Duncan BYRD would appear to be the same Duncan, age 17, in the household of Sutton and Rebecca BYRD. 4) Edward, age 25, appears to be Edward BYRD, b. 30 Dec 1825 in Franklin Co. MS, who was s/o Sutton BYRD and Mary BYRD. 5) Ann, age 18, appears to be Ann Virginia CAIN, who married Edward BYRD, 10 Jan 1850 in Franklin Co., MS. 6) Evidently, Rebecca, age 8, was d/o Sutton and Rebecca BYRD. I found a Rebecca BYRD who married James M. WILSON, 17 May 1860 in Franklin Co., MS. This would appear to be this Rebecca BYRD, as there are only two Rebecca BYRD's marriages in Franklin Co., MS. The other was a Rebecca BYRD that married Joseph CUPIT, 1863 October, 21 in Franklin Co., MS; however, I show her as Martha Rebecca Byrd, d/o Rowan (Roan) BYRD and Lucy E.. COOK. Conclusion: Rebecca LEE, who married Sutton BYRD, is Rebecca SCOTT, the widow of James LEE. Now all I need to know are the parents of Rebecca SCOTT. I believe a good candidate for her father is Joseph SCOTT, who is shown as an old time settler on Page 7, History of Franklin Co.,MS from 1809 to 1899, by W. W. Lambright. It states as follows: "... Joseph Scott, an old time settler, had four sons: Gabriel, Nehemiah, Joseph, Jr.; and Benjamin ...". This book does not name Joseph SCOTT's spouse or daughters. This Joseph SCOTT (bef 1770, Sampson Co., NC - Aft 1820, Franklin Co. MS), is believed to be the s/o Joseph Scott Sr and Mary HOLMES, and a brother to Asha SCOTT, w/o Willis MAGEE.

I have two questions: Do you have any Franklin County Guice connections to Thomas Reed of Jefferson County? His wife was Mary Jane Foreman (Forman?). This was probably about l860. Also, do you have any l940's Guice connections to either one of them from the area of Woodville (Amite?)? You can tell I'm a beginner-- Thanks much!

Oops! That was meant as a note to Fulton. Since it's out there now, does anyone else have any ideas about this Smith family connection?
To whom it may concern: I'm not sure where to go with my Franklin County research. I have no death dates, so I can't ask for obit lookups. Are newspapers available for ILL for this area? I hate to give up at this point but, I just don't know where else to look. thanks, Debbie
Did they move to LA across the river? A lot of families did move from 1870 to 1880 because they lost their land in MS in the wake of the Civil War or the land was worn out from use and they did not have money to buy more. ok, I'm doing the census line by line. I found Middleton THORNHILL and his family in the 1870 Franklin County census. I also found his mother there. In 1880 I found no Thornhill's, not one. Is there anything in particular that happened in Franklin County betwwen 1870 & 1880? Middleton's sisters married Emfinger's and they are still there. That's a lot of missing people, if you have any thoughts, please e-mail me. thanks, Debbie

I think it was his brother Everett who married my father's aunt Decy Linder. Since they lived near Damascus Church which is now in Lincoln County, I think, you may find Harbard there. My Linder cousins at aelind@bayou.com have done a lot of work on our family at that time--including Smiths--and can probably help you.
Posted on: Franklin Co. Ms Queries Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ms/Franklin/10859 Surname: Linder, Erwin, Lee, Coleman ------------------------- A good many years ago I looked at marriage records dating back to the early 1800's in Franklin County. John Oliver--I remember the middle initial as P. but could easily be wrong--signed them as Clerk of Court. My father (b. 1892), who grew up in Franklin County, said that was the grandfather of his good friend Richard Oliver in Natchez, Adams County. Richard married Eloise Stewart of Natchez, probably about l925. His family moved to Louisiana. It included three sisters who ended up in Natchez, too. Perhaps this will help you find them. I will be in Natchez in early May and might be able to make some inquiries for you if you'd like.
