Transcribing The Census: There has to be a better way I have been working on my family tree since 1986 and I am tiring. #1 Why don't "we" transcribe only what we know to be true, with the caveat that we make mistakes just like the original census takers did and with the 'default' that we can always fall back to the originals. As an example, while I found an original written so poorly, that it was not until later that I learned what the childrens actual names were, so I am one of the few people who could accurately "transcribe" what the census taker wrote down. #2 Why not use the actual forms as originally used, even when we now "know better" At least that way, no-one could cook up their own forms. #3 Why not transcribe only those records of information which are of individual interest. I see no reason for anyone to go thru the drudgery of doing a "complete" sheet or county or (Twp or Post Office), while ruining their eyes and repeating errors or making new ones, simply because "they are someone elses relatives, not mine" (or even if they are diligent, they get tired) The census records might then be incomplete which is what they are now. (In fact, many "Family History Centers" shrug their shoulders when you ask for a particular census, and fall back on "the counties have changed or the British burned the records") I realize that many of these concepts can be improved upon, but I am disgusted for having paid taxes to have the census' taken and then being unable to ever put them together again I am quite willing to put my few ancestors on the census lists and I believe that many census would be completed in short order compared to those poor "volunteers that are trying to complete whole counties. If everyone who has a computer only contribute a little, we could accomplish a lot ! L&S, Robert Davis 13117A NW 8th Ave. Vancouver, WA 98685

Dear List Members, I am researching the family name of McCargo. I have them coming from England, Ireland and Scotland, by way of Canada. The name supposedly started in Galloway, Scotland around the early 12th century. I am seeking information on Peter, David, John and Alexander McCargo, around or about 1667-1873. I am also looking for a Robert McCargo who lived in Yell around 1814. Alexander was supposed to have come to the Americas from Canada(1860?). John was found to have settled in Virginia in the (1600's). Peter, i have no sufficient information on. David, applied for a land grant in Virginia in 1781. David had a brother named Stephen who served in the Revolutionary War. I am also seeking information on a John(father) and Littlejohn(son) McCargo of Hlaifax County, Virginia(1732-1876) Any information would be greatly appreciated and i am willing to share what i have. Thank you, Velma A. McCargo
Hi, I'm new to the list and would like to know if anyone can help me with my "brick wall". Does anyone know what newspapers covered DeSoto Co., MS between 1839-1842? I need to find an obituary. My ggggrandfather, Robert B. THOMSON, moved to MO between 1839-1842 and died there a year after he arrived. I have found two conflicting death dates for him, 04 Oct 1839 and 26 Sep 1842. His wife and children left shortly after his death and moved to DeSoto Co., MS to be with "family". I don't know which family, but it could have been with THOM(P)SON or PHILLIPS families. Any help or suggestions would be deeply appreciated. Thanks, Donna
I am new to the list and am looking for any information on Hillar/Hillaire R. SHORES and Elizabeth SHORES (his 1st wife who died there about 1845) or any other information, including whether he appeared on the 1840 or 1850 or 1860 census. Many thanks for any information. Mildred Greenstreet

Subj: Surgery Date: 1/3/01 07:14:40 Mountain Standard Time From: morembry@gmi.net (Al & Syble Embrey) Reply-to: morembry@gmi.net (Al & Syble Embrey) To: Davis1624@aol.com Hi Bob, I enter the hospital in the morning at 7:00 a.m. with the surgery scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. I'll be in surgery about 3 hours where the Doctors will replace my aorta valve and do a bypass of one of the arteries and fix anything else he finds while in there. In order to attach the metal replacement valve it will be necessary to cut the heart open to sew the valve inside the heart. I'll be in ICU for about 3 days and in a room from 5 to 7 days. I'll be away from my computer for a few weeks while I regain my strength. I pray that God will be with the Doctors and guide them and see me through all of this. If it is his will I'll be home in a week or so. By the way did you know Marie Carlton suffered a stroke? She is in Rehab now where she will remain for at least 4 more weeks and maybe more. The stroke affected her left side. If you will please pray for us both. Take care, Syble ----------------------- Headers -------------------------------- Friends and relatives, I received the above message from a very dear friend and I thought you should know about it. I had asked for this information, as I suspect that Syble would have kept it to herself otherwise. Syble Moore Embrey and Marie Carlton have been the driving forces behind the Tate County Mississippi Genealogical And Historical Society in Senatobia, Mississippi and have provided endless information to anyone needing genealogical or historical information about NW MS.. Please join me in wishing both of these ladies a quick recovery and a return to the loving arms of their friends and families. L&S, Bob Davis Vancouver, WA

GUNTOWN is where a famous battle of the Civil War took place. It is called the "BATTLE OF BRICES CROSSROADS" by historians but my GGGrandfather called it the "BATTLE OF GUNTOWN" on his Pension Application. Might be a good place to look for someone who might have died during the war. Pam
