Miller deserted the 38th MS Infantry in Sep 1862. According to a descendant, Bruce Miller of Oklahoma City, he was coming home to see his newly born son, but died from eating green corn and never arrived. (The Bethany Baptist Church minutes show William died in July, 1863, but this is probably an error - his brother, Samuel, was killed at Vicksburg in July 1863.) Whether 1862 or 1863, William could not have been the father of a child born in 1872.
