Ms Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Covington/11037 Surname: Dykes, Chain, Rutland ------------------------- Jeannie, I assume we are talking about the same families. I am researching the Rutlands but I have found it to be impossible not to include the Chains and Dykes, since the families are so entangled. Little Jim Dikes, who was killed at the battle of Shiloh Church, was the son of Jacob and Sarah Rutland Dykes. Jacob's brother, James, married Sarah's sister, Mary Ann (Polly), probably in LA, about 1829. All these families are found in Covington Co, MS by 1850 and 1860. Jim Dikes was married to Jemima Chain, whose brother, Gabriel (Gabe) was also killed at the church...or rather died from wounds received in the fight. Jemima's and Gabe's parents were William and Melinda Pickering Chain. Gabe and Jim are both buried in the Rutland Cemetery near Mt. Olive in Covington Co. Jemima Dikes is on the Covington Co census in 1880, h of h, age 39, with 4 children. The Rutlands are believed to have lived in LA for a time from about 1818 to the 1830's. William R. Rutland is first found in Covington Co in 1840. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Chain, dau of Wm and Melinda, and his sister, Susan, married Mary's brother, James Alexander. It boggles the mind keeping it all straight. Do you have any info on James or Jacob Dykes? Parents, etc. Thanks, Loretta
