Found Thomas Carter age 26 in the 1880 Jones Co Census living with his parents Asa (b MS parent's born GA) and ?Lucy Carter (b SC as well as parents). I do know the family lived within a mile of the Covington/Jones line. Other children listed are ?Asa, Susan, Margaret, Lucy and W B. There is another Carter family living in the next household that I am guessing is also a child of Asa and Lucy. They are listed by initials only. Zion Seminary was located in Covington County at Seminary, Mississippi which is located between Collins and Hattiesburg off highway 49.
"Covington Crossroads" by Gwen Hill says the founder, Rev A.R. Graves, was a Presbyterian Minister and that he frequently returned to his native New York to solicit funds for the benefit of the school. The faculty included very prominent Presbyterian ministers, Rev. George Taylor and Rev. George Moore being two...Zion Seminary had as many as 500 students and a curriculum that included Pre-Law, Pre-Med, Music, and Theology. Classes from first grade thru College were offered. Students from the most influential and wealthiest families were placed under Rev. Graves care. The school was very innovative and said to be 40 years ahead of its' time. The civil War brought a close to the progress and all but one building burned...that one building burned in 1890, erasing the last evidence of the school. The school is gone but the name of the town stands... Persons of any faith were admitted...but they were taught Presbyterian Doctrines. "Covington Crossroads" is for sale at the Collins Public Library "A History of Seminary, Mississippi" by Jerry Windsor is another source for data... >From: Judith Huner <jjhuner@mindspring.com> >To: MSCOVING-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [MSCOVING-L] Zion Seminary >Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 15:07:35 -0700 > >Posted on: Covington Co. You may receive one with your family name inserted...Beware! and tell your relatives, too... **************** As I was leaving last week for MS & GA, I received duplicate pieces of mail from Morphcorp LLC, dba The Gieger Family News - Maxwell and Christina Gieger, 1181 S Parker Rd #105, Denver CO 80231, (303)751-0869" (I bet this is a mail box to go) offering a Book and CD ROM purported to contain "all the Gieger records" at the pre-publication price of $34.95 plus a $5.00 "order processing fee." > Never heard of them... > Two of my sons got that same mailing... > At least, they admit that it is raw data which you will need Word- Processing software to access...but not to worry because "your kid can figure it out" This bothers me because they are preying on un-informed people... > One thing that caught my eye is, they proclaim that Nona Gieger set the Family Longevity record. WELL you don't say... Nona was my PATERNAL Grandmother and although she did live 100 years, 9 months, she was a COFFMAN who married a GIEGER...My grandfather died at 49. > Another thing - "Did you know that 25 Gieger households live in FLORIDA in 1999(which is the largest state gathering.)(We've got the counts in all states.)" Well, of course we knew...Many of Felix Gieger's descendants migrated there...and some of Cornelius' did, too. > DON'T BE TAKEN IN BY THIS - Unless you have money to burn, it will likely not benefit you. It had a lot of information about how to start searching, and on the family of the author(who is not related and as I recall, went to Jail for mail Fraud). Also, I saw a different colored copy with that same information for another Family in the Collins, MS Library...They have blanks in the back for you to fill in your own data.
