Ms Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Covington/915 Surname: Hall ------------------------- Steve, I am also descended from Dr. A. H. Hall. I am not certain which ...of his spouses... is the mother of Judge Evans Hall. My G-Grandmother was born in 1889 in Old Williamsburg and was the youngest of his 13 children. This leads me to my true interest... which is finding the grave of Evans Hall. I suspect Hattiesburg, MS, but have no leads. I have also found a grave in Monticello, MS. It is the grave of one of Evans wives or possibly one of A.H.'s wives. I haven't been there in 10 years and can't remember the dates. Any Ideas, Macey Johnson 901-758-8080 P.S. I am 38 years old!

I will send you a report of my Hall family for you to look over. My line is from Dr. Alexander Hamilton Hall's second marriage to Mary Ann McDonald. Their son Henry Clay Hall was my grandfather. His wife Addie Mae Miller died just a few short days after giving birth to my mother and Henry died about a year later. Many of my relatives are buried at the Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery and my mom was raised by her Aunt Della Minnie (Miller) Turnage m.Sam Turnage, who lived down the road from the church.

    3. Posted on: Covington Co. Ms Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Covington/912 Surname: Hall ------------------------- About once a year, I post a query regarding the Hall Family who lived in Old Williamsburg, MS from 1870 to perhaps 1910. Judge Evans Hall was married twice having 13 children with his 1st wife and later 2 children with a 2nd wife. My great grandmother was the youngest of his 13 original children. She lived to be 93 years old. As a child, I remember, many Hall Family reunions at Mt. Zion Methodist Church. These reunions lasted until perhaps 1973 and were well attended with 100+ relatives. I have no record of any current Hall family. As a child, I was told that one relative was a Judge in Hattiesburg named Stanton Hall and another relative was a Congressman George Robert Hall? There is no way all these people have vanished! Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Macey Johnson

Please keep my e-mail address handy. I would love to prove a link between our lines. I haven't been able to get back farther than my ggg grandfather Malcolm. However, there is a John Mathison living in the same area of Henry County, Alabama in 1830...and he had two sons listed. This might be Malcolm's father. Do you know exactly how your Mathison's got to Covington County, MS? Curious - Steve

    3. Posted on: Covington Co. Ms Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Covington/908 Surname: Dykes, Rutlands, Graves ------------------------- Dawn, Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I've found a lot of my Rutland information to be, at best, incomplete. I found a tax book for Covington Co, which covers the years between 1819 and 1899, and I can't find one Rutland who paid any taxes! They are hiding from the tax man, which is why we can't find them. I haven't read the book, but I have been told there is no reference to any Rutlands being involved in the fight, but they were all kin, I know that, so the possibility does exist. My Rutland ancestor, William A. (Allen), moved from Covington Co to Lincoln Co about 1881 or 82, according to one source. I find this intriguing and wonder why. I also wonder why the family doesn't know anything about the Rutland family. Allen's mother was an Indian. >From her pic, I would say at least 3/4. No information on his father, expect possibly his name was John, and that isn't proven fact. "Little Jim Dikes, lost his life in the Shiloh battle" is all the info on the tombstone, which is homemade. Gabe Chain's stone, beside Jim, reads the same. I have pics of the tombstones which I will scan and email to you, along with the email address of a descendant of Jim and Jemima Chain Dykes. Perhaps she can help with the Dykes. Loretta

Dykes is related or not.If I'm right, his parents were Jacob H. and Sarah E. Dykes. They are in the 1850 Covington Co.census, too with their 9 kids.James C.is listed as the oldest,14;Harriet,13;Melinda,11;Arid J.(male),9;Lev--y (?)7;Cinderella,5;Samantha,4;Sarintha,2;and Levanda,3&1/2.Jacob and Sarah were born in La. and all of the kids in Ms.I think, this is just me,of course, that Jacob and my James are brothers. There is only 4 yrs diff.,they were both born in La.,they lived in Cov.Co.at the same time and I found them not to far apart in the census, which would mean they lived fairly close to each other.I think James C. married Jemina Chain. The battle took place about 10-20 yrs later, which would put him at the right age.I just finished the book and copied alot of it but it's on a floppy.I read in the book that there are no dates on his grave. Some of my family is hoping to come down that way this spring. We want to look at different ceme.'s,etc.. where our Hintons,Andrews, and Dykes are buried.Don't know yet;it's according to the health of my parents and aunts.I'll keep my eyes open for Rutlands, but they are few and far between.ha.Later,Dawn

    3. Posted on: Covington Co. Ms Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Covington/904 Surname: Mathison ------------------------- I looked at your family photos. There are similar features to James Mathison b 1770. Many of his descendants have been carpenters with his son Neil building one of the oldest churches still standing in MS in now Jeff Davis formerly covington co called Hoepwell Presbyterian. Neill also built two of Covington counties courthouses that burned in the 1800's. The fact that your Mathison spell their name with a i instead of Matheson makes me think they may be closely related since mathison is not so common. Janet

He moved to Henry/ Barbour county Alabama (probably as a young boy)around 1830. He married Eliza Wright and they had ten children. Many Southern Mathisons are related to this original couple. 3. Posted on: Covington Co. Ms Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Covington/896 Surname: Dykes, Graves, Rutland, Bullock ------------------------- Dawn, Thanks for the reply and I'm sorry I haven't answered sooner, but my computer has been down. The info on Mary Ann being born in Scott Co is interesting. I haven't checked that area. I had heard that her parents had gone to La shortly after they were married, or at least before 1819, when the child, William R. was born, at least the oldest I have on record. Perhaps a check of the Scott Co census will reveal something. I am interested in anything you have on the Rutlands. I'll correct my files about Isaac's date of death. My files are so incomplete anyway, it is unreal. This family line is very hard to trace. I'm in search of the Rutlands and, like you, I've decided maybe I could get in the back door, since they shut the front one. I checked my Graves file and didn't find Sarah Jane, which doesn't mean anything. It certainly seems likely to me that there will be a connection, since the Rutlands, Dykes, and Graves are already connected, all from the Covington Co area. It is too co incidental not to connect. Do you have a James Dykes, Jr, who married Jemima Chain? He went by "Little Jim" and is buried in the Rutland cemetery, Mt Olive, Covington Co, Ms.? I don't know if he is the J. B. listed in my chart. If so, I have an interesting story about him. Loretta

The source that I'm working on is pretty vague. My grandfather was named William MATHISON Rogers,b.1870,SC; his parents were CMG Rogers and Susan Pierce. William was, reportedly, named after a grandparent= which side of the family, I have no idea. I'm just hoping that he shows up somehow in the Mathison/Matheson Family. Thanks Barbara
