Ms Queries Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Covington?read=628 Surname: ------------------------- To all whom it may concern: This is just my observation. I am skeptical that this photograph is from 1843. The first photograph ever taken was in Paris, France in 1839. So I seriously doubt that anyone in the world, even moreso Covington County, MS, would have been able to photograph or be photgraphed with such good quality as represented in this picture. Especially since photography was just in its infancy. Next, Collins did not exist as a town until well after the War Between the States, which was 1861-65. I'm sure many subscribers to this page would know that date. I believe circa 1880's. Finally, the period of dress the subjects are wearing is more typical of 1893 than 1843. You may want to find out some more definite information about the photograph itself before attempting to identify the individual subjects. Sammy

    3. Posted on: Covington Co. Ms Queries Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Covington?read=612 Surname: Blackwell, Hollingsworth, Pittman, Monk ------------------------- Greetings, Just to let you all know that, thanks to the generosity of Ann Stewart McDonald and Joe Pierce, I've uploaded a picture you just have to see. It's a picture of the First Jurors after a fire in 1843, and shows a pretty good picture of 16 Men, yet un-identified. These fine folks have also provided a list of two different groups of names, of which one is a list of the photo subjects. What I would like anyone who is interested to do, is to view the picture, and see if you can help us identify them from the list shown. Not to persuade you, but it appears to me, that since the photo shows 16 men, and the one list has 14 jurors' names, with two others mentioned at the bottom, this would be the probable list to choose from. The other list of "Grand Jurors" has some 20 names or so. To view this picture and list, visit the MSCoving website at http://www.rootsweb.com/~mscoving/ and scroll down just below the GenConnect icons and the SSDI search engine, and find a link titled The 1843 Covington County Jurors - CAN YOU IDENTIFY THEM? Click on it, and you're looking at it. This notice is being sent to both the Mississippi-L and the MSCoving-L, and I appologize to all of you who are subscribers of both for the duplicate messages you'll receive. I'm also going to post it to the GenConnect board for Covington County, and you may get that one also if you're on auto-notify status. I hope to hear from some of you. I welcome photos to upload depicting any of the counties of the MSGenWeb that I administer to, being Jones, Covington, Wayne, Greene, George, and Jackson Counties. If you have an old photo you'd like to share, email me with it's description, and I'll tell you how to best transfer it.
