Hey Ben - My husband's grandmother was Alta Jane Ashley, wife of Louis Moses Ashley. As I told Joan, I'll look at the "Ashley drawer" Sunday night or Monday night, after my daughter, Ashley, (yes she is named after the family) goes back to college. Joan - I have a bunch of loosely organized Ashley data. My husband's paternal grandmother was a Copiah County Ashley. I'll look through it and get back to you Sunday night or Monday night - I have a daughter home from college for the weekend, so I won't be able to look until she goes back. I don't know about the Randle or Fields, but I do recognize John S. Ashley (should be John Sanders Ashley) Marti -----Original Message----- From: RayRH@aol.com [mailto:RayRH@aol.com] Sent: Friday, September 07, 2001 10:35 AM To: MSCOPIAH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: ASHLEY'S in MS Marti, Are you doing research on the ASHLEY'S? Hi All, I am willing to do lookups in the 1860 and 1870 Copiah county section of the US federal census. Please email me directly for such lookups, to avoid overloading the mail list. If you place the word LOOKUP in the subject line, you should avoid deletion along with my spam. Robert
Thank you so much for the offer Robert! I would appreciate a lookup for our Walter Miller who married Nancy Brown in 1865. The 1870 census should have information about them as a family, but the 1860 would only have individual information. Your offer gives me hope that I might find these people yet! Kathryn Having lived in Copiah Co all my life, I would guess that "the" Baptist church was and is First Baptist Church of Wesson. The most prominent cemetery in Wesson is Wesson Cemetery. The Thompsons and Ellzey families were both well known in the area so I feel fairly certain that these would be well worth further research. Dan
well Wesson is a college town, so dont imagine much has changed, check out there home page, online, you can go to Ask Jeeves, and type in what you are looking for and where, and it will take you there, it will most likely give you a place you can call, the church today most likely has email too At 02:27 PM 8/21/2001 -0700, K. I have a funeral notice of a great aunt, Nettie Thompson, which reads: "The friends and acquaintances of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Thompson are respectfully invited to attend the funeral services of their daughter, Nettie, at the Baptist Church, Wesson, Miss., May 10th 1895." Mr. E. H. Thompson was Edmund Henshaw Thompson and his wife was Mary Theodocia (Docia) Ellzey. Nettie was a young girl or child when she died of burns. Does anyone know the name of the Baptist Church at this time period? The wording of the notice seems to imply that there was only one Baptist church there at the time. Also, if anyone knows which cemetery might have been used for the burial, that would be helpful. Thanks! Kathryn --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Make international calls for as low as $0.04/minute with Yahoo! Messenger.
Keep up the good work. Thanks for your efforts. Thank you so much for sharing this with me. The Presbyterian Church in Crystal Springs is just amazing. They have a balcony in the back of the church which was apparently for the slaves. In the back of the church, there is a picture of all of the pastors. My grandfather is the one farthest to the left-since he was the original pastor. Were it not for that picture, I would have no idea what he looked like. You may wish to pass this information on to Ms Little and the Lindesys. I am looking forward to our next visit to the area and hope to be able to spend several nights there. We have a relative living in Hazlehurst. She still attends the Presbyterian Church there. Her name is Louise Taylor Reagan, and I recall that she lives just around the corner from the church. She was the daughter of Annie Trawick Taylor. Lynda, It is great hearing from you. Yes, I have been to Copiah County. Actually, I have a heritage in both Crystal Springs and Hazlehurst as my great grandfather established the Presbyterian churches in both cities. My grandfather grew up in Crystal Springs and my father was born there. Unfortunately, I only learned of my great grandfather after my father had died. We recently had a family reunion there, so I got to see the churches that he founded, etc. The country there is really beautiful. I hope to have another chance to visit there a little longer.
