Probably not much help, but a hint. I live in Lincoln County, about 5 miles south of Copiah line. I have a Womack family about 2 1/2 miles closer to Copiah than I am. Grafton family owned a dept. store in downtown Brookhaven between 1930 - 1970. There are several Grafton descendents in the area. Maybe you could find some help a few miles south. Good luck! -----Original Message----- From: LaDawn [mailto:garland@htcomp.net] Sent: Tuesday, September 26, 2000 7:51 PM To: MSCOPIAH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MSCOPIAH-L] TRAFTON/WOMACK Families Hello LIst, I am trying to find any information on Malachi TRAFTON or Nancy WOMACK, married in Copiah County on Feb. 23, 1841 (his name was misspelled as GRAFTON and Benjamin WOMACK was the bondsman) Nancy Womack was born in Miss. abt. 1823. Malachi Trafton was supposedly born in S.C. abt. 1820. I have found them on the census records for Copiah county in 1850. I have found records of land purchased by Malachi Trafton and James TONEY in 1840 (Hinds county) as well as an Oliver Trafton (possibly a brother of father?) at that same time. Legend is in the family that Nancy was Native American possibly Choctaw. I have heard that Nancy Womack's father may have been named Nathan, but have found no record of this yet. They later moved to Texas and are found in Gonzales county in 1883. If anyone has any information on any of these people, it would be greatly appreciated, this seems to be my brick wall, I have not been able to find out who the parents were of either of these people. Leslie, I checked the AIS index of the mortality schedules on Ancestry.com which includes the 1870 MS schedule, but found no Darwin surnames in that state. Only found two Darwin surnamed individuals in this database: Ann Darwin - Wayne Co, PA, 3 y/o died in Nov 1859 of a "cold" Peter Darwin - Brooke Co, WV, 11 mo/o died in Aug 1869 of cholera Robert Stuart
Thanks Leslie: Although I don't have a center that is near me, I'll sure see what I can find. Leslie Hill
Leslie, Most Family History Centers have the US Mortality Schedules. Check the one nearest you. Also, Ancestry.com offers that information. Hope you find what you need. Would anyone have easy access to the 1870 Mortality schedule for Copiah Co. My 2nd great-grandfather, Pendleton G. Darwin died in Aug. 1869, and am trying to determine if he had made it there before he died. His son married there in 1877. Thank you so much for any help-- Leslie S. Hill
