Hi Bob/Dan, When I was at the Hazelhurst Courthouse Chancellery Annex in Sept, the following person gave me a card saying she was available for research work for a fee. I have not worked with her so can't comment on the quality of her work - BryanH. The room is large, and set up nicely with several large tables for doing research, and all are completely accessable. I never saw the basement or third floor of the old building, so I do not have anything to compare to, but it appears to be a very nice setup to me. An Historical Society could do a tremendous service, as many of the books do not have an index. That would make a great project for such a society of volunteers. Larry
Hello All, I don't believe I have ever posted Paul's email address on the Copiah site but I could be wrong. If you can locate it for me please let me know and I will remove it. Paul has never been receptive to having his search requests be handled via email. Actually, I don't know how he wants people to contact him re: research. I have never asked for any of his time. Another note, does anyone know of a 'professional' researcher in Copiah County? I get that question quite often. Dear Dan and LHill; If possible please notify Rootsweb Copiah Site to remove my E-Mail. Dear Leslie Hill, I will put your request in my pending file. I don't have time for many research requests due to building projects. I know at one point over 200 queries were listed. I can refer people to paid researchers or can put them into a pending file which may be 3 months old at given points in the fiscal year. Library Directors do not have a lot of free time. I have discovered through a professional researcher that my great grandfather, REASON ERWIN GODBOLD, of Caseyville, Copiah County, died "on or about July 1, 1862". That "on or about" really has me curious as to how and where he died. If anyone has this information I would certainly appreciate hearing from you. Ed Godbold
I would be very interested in helping with Copiah County research, I don't live in the area, but I do go to the FHL here quit a bit. So let me know if there is anything I can help with. I am researching Hogg's and Pendarvis's. Brenda
Sounds like a society would be a great thing. Anyone out there researching the John S. ASHLEY family in Copiah Co.? Also interested in FIELDS or FIELD. Thanks, JOAN in MI
I have contacted Paul Cartwright (he and I both belong to the same SAR chapter) and he agrees that it would be a very good thing to have a Copiah County Historical Society, so hopefully we are getting the ball rolling. I will let everyone know as further developments take place. Dan
For those of us unable to travel and research Copiah County I look forward to a Historical Society. Looking for descendant's and researcher's with the surname MCVAY/MCVEY in their lines. Mr. Paul Cartwright is very helpful who I believe he is an excellent person for obtaining data/info for Copiah County. (Hint: a lot of Copiah people removed to Winn Parish, LA and I am sure that WPGHA would like to exchange journals. WPGAH won 2nd place for their quarterly in the Family Tree contest this year!) Hi All, If you are serious about starting an historical society, I would contact Paul Cartwright, the director the the Jefferson-Copiah Regional Library in Hazlehurst. He is always quite helpful in matters such as this. By the way, does anyone know if the renovations at the courthouse are affecting access to records. I plan to make my annual pilgrimage there next month. Hoping not to get him deluged with email, his address is: pcartw@copjef.lib.ms.us Robert J. Stuart Arlington, Texas
Thanks Dan, I'll try them if I have to, but it gets a little expensive for us out-of-state folks at $15 for each piece of info we need, especially if you are researching several different family lines in MS. Appreciate it--- Leslie Hill
I don't know if the library has them, but the state archives has everything available on newspapers in the area. Dan
Does someone possibly know if the library in Hazlehurst has old newspapers on microfilm from 1903, the Wesson area? I am trying to obtain two obits for sisters who died the same year, lived in Wesson. Thanks for any info anyone can give. Leslie Hill LHill42731@aol.com
Dan, In regards to starting an Historical Society, on my trip I visited the Society in Washington Co., Va., which happens to be in the Court House building. You might contact them for guidance. They have a sizable library, but more importantly, they have indexed many of their library resources on a computer. So all you have to do is type in a surname and first name, and up comes a list of references. Someone from Copiah, or elsewhere, may want to go to the Washington Co., Va Historical Society and see how they operate. They have a link at the USGenWeb site. Larry
There have been so many favorable responses in reference to starting a Copiah County Historical Society. I hope local people will be as enthusiastic. Does anyone have access to a set of bylaws that might be used as a sample to get things started? Dan
Me too. I am located in Illinois, and can't help "on site", but I will help in terms of becoming a member and any other way I can do so from so far away.
