Hi Marion, Thanks for your reply on my Deed of Trust question. I don't think there was a family relationship with the Chapman man who was the trustee on the deed but I think he may have been representing the merchant. I checked back on the 1870 Clarke Co. MS census around Becky Woodard's dwelling (Rebecca A. Woodward) and found no Chapman listed, so he doesn't appear to be a neighbor of hers in Enterprise. Her brother, Samuel Loftin Williams, lived next door to her at the time so I am surprised that he didn't file the Deed of Trust for her. I am surprised that the County would allow a woman to file the deed on her own name and it doesn't mention her husband's name at all. I don't think she was a widow in 1870 because her last child was born in October of 1872, but you never know! She and her husband, William Woodard or Woodward, moved to MS about 1867 from Clarke Co, AL where they were from. He registered to vote in Jasper Co., MS in 1867, then Rebecca appears in 1870 in Enterprise with her children, and filed the deed of trust. Her husband does not appear in the 1870 census either in MS or AL or LA or TX, although I understand from Bennie White, that the 1870 Clarke Co. MS census was not complete. Rebecca Woodward showed up in Citronelle, AL (Mobile Co., AL) in the 1880 census so I am not sure when she left MS and moved back to AL. I have never found any more info on William Woodard, no grave or death date. She may have been widowed or perhaps divorced him but I don't know. Our aunt has his voters registration dated 1867 which is the only document of his that survived. You would think since that much folded piece of paper survived, that his family would have known of his death and received his personal effects which would indicate a death rather than divorce. His grandaughter (age 83) told me that she heard that he was a gambler but she had no knowlege of what happened to him. I was hoping that when Bennie got around to recording the Enterprise Cemetery, a grave for him might be found! Any ideas for me? I think I need to check the divorce records to be sure she did not divorce him but I don't know where they would be located for Clarke Co., MS. Do you know? Thanks, Jackie Feldman Sammamish, WA
