    3. Hi All my relatives on "both sides" have Mississippi roots of many years. I had very little MS schooling so I don't know much MS history. Please let me know some books or other places where I might get MS history. The following is a list of treaties that formed MS. Frann > > > > >TREATIES CREATING MISSISSIPPI > > The Choctaw, Chickasaw and Natchez Indians at one time were in possession of the 30 million > acres that make the present state of Mississippi. Hernando DeSoto entered in 1540 and in 1699 > the white man camped at Ocean Springs across from Biloxi. The United States began making > treaties in 1786 and made the final one in 1830. > > 1786-The Treaty of Hopewell gave the U. S. certain trading rights in the Choctaw Nation. > There was no land involved in this treaty but it did re-define the old Choctaw line which is > basically the Georgia-Alabama border as it is today. Under this treaty any U. S. citizen > would forego his citizenship if he settled in the Choctaw Nation, thus making him under > Indian law. > > 1795-The Treaty of San Lorenzo was an agreement with Spain defining the southern inland border > of Mississippi as the 31st degree boundary. It is the border of Mississippi that begins at > the Mississippi River in the southwest corner and continues eastward approximately 100 miles > to the Pearl River at a point about 15 miles southeast of Columbia. This did not include the > coastal area. > > 1801-The Treaty of Fort Adams gave the U. S. the Vicksburg, Woodville, Natchez region plus the > right to build a road from Natchez to Nashville. Originally called the Chickasaw Road it was > later changed to the Natchez Trace. If you aren't in a hurry, this road is the way to travel. > Those of us with Mississippi roots are probably a little prejudiced but we think it is the most > beautiful drive in America, especially in the fall and spring. > > 1802-The Treaty of Fort Confederation was signed on the Itombi Ikbi which is now the Tombigbee > River. Fort Confederation was about 50 miles northwest of the present site of Demopolis, > Alabama. The part given to Mississippi in the treaty was a small strip in the southeast > corner of Mississippi. > > 1805-The Treaty of Mount Dexter was signed near the present-day site of Columbia, Mississippi. > The Treaty of Fort Confederation combined with The Treaty of Mount Dexter gave the U. S. a > large block of land which extended from about 60 miles east of Natchez to the > Alabama-Mississippi border. Choctaw chiefs Apuckshunubbee, Pushmataha and Mosholatubbee > signed with $50,000 cash transferred in the deal. > > 1816-The Treaty of Choctaw Trading House was signed at St. Stephens, Alabama. It gave the > U. S. a small block of land above the present-day Columbus, Mississippi. > > 1816-The First Chickasaw Treaty referred to as the Treaty of Chickasaw Council House was > signed west of Tupelo at Old Field. General Andrew Jackson was present at the signing which > gave Mississippi a small parcel of land in the Amory-Aberdeen area but more land to Tennessee > and Alabama. > > 1820-The Treaty of Doak's Stand is sometimes called The Puckshenubbee Treaty and includes a > large area with such present-day locations as Greenville, Belzoni, Crystal Springs, Jackson, > & Yazoo city. It was signed in the eastern part of what is now Madison County. Unfortunately > for the Choctaws, they accepted land "beyond the great river" as partial payment and were soon > moved to western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. > > 1830-The Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek was signed in Noxubee County about 15 miles west of > Macon. This involved the largest tract of land which started near Waynesboro and extended > in a northwesterly direction to 75 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. Greenwood, LeFlore, > Mashulatubbee and Nittachee were the Indian chiefs who signed the treaty. > > 1832-The Chickasaw Treaty or Pontotoc Creek Treaty involved several million acres in the > northern portion of the state and ended the claim of any tribe to land in Mississippi. > This land started at the northern border of the state and extended south to the region > acquired in the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek. The western border was the Mississippi River > and the eastern border was the present Alabama-Mississippi line. > > >
