Gail, I'm not sure if the Archives participates in the interlibrary loan for the newspaper film. If they do, the Meridian PL can order from the Archives. The MPL might know if the Archives participates. Of course, the other alternative is to go to Archives in Jackson and view there. One other point. The Archives will do a lookup for certain info. You can send a request via e-mail from their web site. MS residents get the first hour research free; thereafter, I think it's $15 per hour. If you are looking for a particular item from the 10 Feb 1949 issue, they most likely will check it for you; make a copy, and send to you. There is a small copying/postage fee. Once we get the microfilm number for the newspaper in question, how do we get to view it? Can we request the roll thru the local Meridian library? (Starkville newspaper for Feb. 10, 1949 is the one I'm looking for) Gail Swenson
That's probably the case. I probably read the article myself but have forgotten about it. Yes, I know of the Globe, Times, and Messenger. MS Dept of Archives & History has some issues of the Times and Messenger on microfilm. Don't think they have the Globe. Actually the Clarke County Times (Enterprise, MS) was published at least through 13 Sep 1907 (MDAH has microfilm) and Mississippi Messenger through 1924 (MDAH has). Also, MDAH has microfilm of some issues of The Enterprise Journal from 1875 - 1918. Chancery Clerk has some issues Mississippi Messenger between 1914-1924 and most all issues of Tribune from 1923. I have found obits of many of my relatives in the old Tribune issues. If anyone would like to check out the newspaper holdings at MDAH, go here: http://www.mdah.state.ms.us/arlib/contents/newspaper.html The also have some from other states. Great! I wondered if it was "McCarty", but the Confederate Veteran article had "McCartz" which is why I went ahead and typed it that way. Bennie will be glad to know that the article was in the Clarke Tribune! Bennie, I will have to find the Article. It may have been put in about 1983 during the 150 th year of the County. The Tribune was started in 1916. Before that Shubuta had Mississippi Messenger. 1902--1916 Some copies are in the Clarke Co. Chancery Clerks office. 1902---1908 The Quitman Globe, I don't know about copies. 1887 ---1905 Clarke Co. Times -- A few copies still exist. I will hunt my copy of the article. Billy
Was the Tribune in operation in 1911? Haven't been able to find any issues from that period (at least the MS Dept of Archives & History doesn't have any). Thanks for the article. I have this somewhere, it was published in the Clarke Co. Tribune. At the bottom the supervisor's name is Joe E. McCarty not with the Z. I want to have a Memorial section because a lot of people have placed a Marker in a cemetery honoring the soldier even if he is not bured there. So keep them coming. Billy
Recently while doing some Civil War Research, I came across the following article in the "Confederate Veteran Magazine" (Vol. 20, page 511), and since Billy's working on a Civil War Page for Bennie's site, I thought I'd pass it on..... CONFEDERATE MONUMENT AT QUITMAN, MISS. Over a thousand people gathered in Quitman October 24, 1911, to witness the unveiling of the monument erected to the Confederate soldiers. Mrs. Lewis, President of the local Chapter, U.D.C., assisted by eleven young ladies (Misses Ruth Edmiston, Mattie Neal, Gladys Barbour, Pauline Neal, Christine Lewis, Bessie Arrington, Lillian Doby, Grace Borbour, Mary Alice Massingale, Anna Lou Adams, Minnie May Boykin), all clad in white, represented the Confederate states. The monument was presented to the local Camp, U.C.V. in a beautiful speech by Mrs. C.S. Edmiston, and was accepted in behalf of the veterans by Col. I.B. Brown, who in turn presented it to Clarke County through the board of supervisors, and it was accepted by Joe E. McCartz, a member of the board from the Enterprise District. A delicious dinner was served by the ladies near the courthouse.

We now have C-D posted on the Confederate soldiers. http://www.netpathway.com/~bennie/confedsold.htm#buie Bennie
I've been thinking a little further on my question, and I wonder....is it possible that the "Josaph" is actually Cameron's son Thomas J. (J could be for Joseph)? Does anyone know? Thanks! Marion Because we are blessed to have Bennie White's page, I discovered another clue that I could sure use some help with! It appears on the Membership Lists of East Pleasant Grove Church, in Clarke Co., MS. (1890-1894) On this list it shows Cameron Grayson (which we've discovered is our line), and there's a JOSAPH GRAYSON (could be Joseph, but it is spelled with an "A" on all three lists). WHO DOES JOSAPH GRAYSON belong to? I have not come across any Joseph in the 1840-1870 Census lists that Bennie has on his pages, so where did he come from? He apparently lived in Quitman for several years. Does anyone have any clues? Thanks........... Marion :) P.S. Also on this list are the HAYS families, that we've already established that DALLAS GRAYSON married into. Dallas was the son of Cameron Grayson. So it might be a pretty good bet that JOSAPH is related to our bunch, and he may be a clue to our ancestors that CAMERON belongs to. >>
