    3. Hi All my relatives on "both sides" have Mississippi roots of many years. I had very little MS schooling so I don't know much MS history. Please let me know some books or other places where I might get MS history. The following is a list of treaties that formed MS. Frann > > > > >TREATIES CREATING MISSISSIPPI > > The Choctaw, Chickasaw and Natchez Indians at one time were in possession of the 30 million > acres that make the present state of Mississippi. Hernando DeSoto entered in 1540 and in 1699 > the white man camped at Ocean Springs across from Biloxi. The United States began making > treaties in 1786 and made the final one in 1830. > > 1786-The Treaty of Hopewell gave the U. S. certain trading rights in the Choctaw Nation. > There was no land involved in this treaty but it did re-define the old Choctaw line which is > basically the Georgia-Alabama border as it is today. Under this treaty any U. S. citizen > would forego his citizenship if he settled in the Choctaw Nation, thus making him under > Indian law. > > 1795-The Treaty of San Lorenzo was an agreement with Spain defining the southern inland border > of Mississippi as the 31st degree boundary. It is the border of Mississippi that begins at > the Mississippi River in the southwest corner and continues eastward approximately 100 miles > to the Pearl River at a point about 15 miles southeast of Columbia. This did not include the > coastal area. > > 1801-The Treaty of Fort Adams gave the U. S. the Vicksburg, Woodville, Natchez region plus the > right to build a road from Natchez to Nashville. Originally called the Chickasaw Road it was > later changed to the Natchez Trace. If you aren't in a hurry, this road is the way to travel. > Those of us with Mississippi roots are probably a little prejudiced but we think it is the most > beautiful drive in America, especially in the fall and spring. > > 1802-The Treaty of Fort Confederation was signed on the Itombi Ikbi which is now the Tombigbee > River. Fort Confederation was about 50 miles northwest of the present site of Demopolis, > Alabama. The part given to Mississippi in the treaty was a small strip in the southeast > corner of Mississippi. > > 1805-The Treaty of Mount Dexter was signed near the present-day site of Columbia, Mississippi. > The Treaty of Fort Confederation combined with The Treaty of Mount Dexter gave the U. S. a > large block of land which extended from about 60 miles east of Natchez to the > Alabama-Mississippi border. Choctaw chiefs Apuckshunubbee, Pushmataha and Mosholatubbee > signed with $50,000 cash transferred in the deal. > > 1816-The Treaty of Choctaw Trading House was signed at St. Stephens, Alabama. It gave the > U. S. a small block of land above the present-day Columbus, Mississippi. > > 1816-The First Chickasaw Treaty referred to as the Treaty of Chickasaw Council House was > signed west of Tupelo at Old Field. General Andrew Jackson was present at the signing which > gave Mississippi a small parcel of land in the Amory-Aberdeen area but more land to Tennessee > and Alabama. > > 1820-The Treaty of Doak's Stand is sometimes called The Puckshenubbee Treaty and includes a > large area with such present-day locations as Greenville, Belzoni, Crystal Springs, Jackson, > & Yazoo city. It was signed in the eastern part of what is now Madison County. Unfortunately > for the Choctaws, they accepted land "beyond the great river" as partial payment and were soon > moved to western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. > > 1830-The Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek was signed in Noxubee County about 15 miles west of > Macon. This involved the largest tract of land which started near Waynesboro and extended > in a northwesterly direction to 75 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. 1. Lewis family in Clarke Co.
    2. Dean Reid
    3. Posted on: Clarke Co. Ms Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Clarke/303 Surname: Lewis ------------------------- This is what I have on how the Lewis Clan arrived in Clarke Co. back in the 1860's: I have shared this info with others and I am including it here for Lewis researchers: The earliest verifiable Lewis that I have is Walden Lewis who was born in 1875 in either VA or NC. A record of a passport issued at South West Point, TN showing that Walden Lewis and Hugh Beaty obtained a License to trade in the Cherokee Nation with their purpose being to purchase cattle. It is dated July 5, 1802. It reads 'Hugh Beaty having obtained licence to trade in the Cherokee Nation & his object being to purchase Cattle he is hereby permitted to take Walden Lewis & George Burns to assist him in driving his stock . . . 5th July 1802, There is also a record from Roane Co., TN County Court Minutes, Minute Book A (1801-1805) with the following notation: " We, the Grand Jury, present Richard Oliver and Walden Lewis for committing an assault and battery on each other." This is dated July 29, 1802. On October 9, 1802, Walden Lewis and his wife, along with several others, obtained permission at South West Point, TN, to pass through the Cherokee Nation to Jackson County in Georgia. It reads 'Henry Kerr & his wife, Walden Lewis & his wife, John Jones & John Lee have permission to pass thro that part of the Cherokee Nation between this place & Jackson County in the state of Georgia . . . 9 Octo 1802 N.B. The above persons have with them 4 horses'. In 1805 records indicate a host of Lewises participated in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery. Walden drew two blanks in Greene County, (later to become Greene Co., MS) He and his family were in Greene Co., MS then moved to Jasper Co after the 1833 Dancing Rabbit Treaty that opened it for settlement. The family remained in Jasper Co. until after the Civil War, when most moved to Clarke Co., MS some staying and others moving on to Jones Co. I have details of who left Jasper Co. and who stayed, also who left Clarke Co. and who stayed. And I have all the lines on the Lewis clan that moved to Jones Co. Milton Alexander Lewis, son of Alexander Lewis and Amanda Fitzallen (Ryan) Lewis, was serving in the Mississippi Legislature in 1908, representing Jasper County. His biography in the official record states that "His paternal ancestors came from Virginia to Georgia in the early part of the last century; his great-grandfather, Walden Lewis, fought in the Indian Wars." So far, I have not been able to verify any service by Walden in the Indian Wars or War of 1812. Walden Lewis married Mary Polly Mosely in 1802. He died in 1850 in Jasper Co. She died in 1870. I trace my line through one of their sons John Anderson Lewis b. 1804 in GA. He was married to Mary Ann Hutto. My line to JA and Mary Ann is through their son Walden Lewis b. 1822 and married to Malinda E. b. 1824. At 42 years old, Walden was in the 1st Regiment Miss. Calvary during the Civil War and surrendered at Citronelle, AL on May 4, 1865. Their son John C.C. Lewis was my great grandfather (b. 1847) He was married to Georgianne McBride in 1874. Both are buried at Antioch Methodist Church cemetery in Jones Co. Their son Jasper Lewis b. 1888 was my grandfather. I have quite a few facts about all these Lewis folks. I have been researching them since 1978 (long before the internet). I have a manuscript (not yet published) on early Mississippi settlers that contains more details than I can list here. I am not quick to jump to conclusions and have tried to verify info through multiple sources. I hope this helps any other Lewis researcher. Dean Reid

    2. I am also a descendent of J.C. WATTS and Eliza Jane KING. No death dates, yet. A Probate record for James WATTS around 1870 can answer some of your questions. I haven't seen it and I don't have a copy of it because the copier was down the day my sister saw it in Quitman. She was running short on time so she did not hand copy it, eight pages or so.. They are buried at the Old Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Elwood, Clarke, MS. I am a descendent of Sarah Tissiloo WATTS. I'll be happy to share what I have. Also there is a Neal WATTS and Doug GORDON doing research on this line, too. Have you checked out the Egroups site for Clarke County? It's great! HAPPY NEW YEAR AND HAPPY HUNTING.............
