I thought this was interesting and wanted to share it with those of you who don't get much local news: Ken ---------- The Greenwood Commonwealth Greenwood, MS Apr 25, 2003 J.Z. George Law Office on endangered list Robert Johnson birthplace also included on list The J.Z. George Law Office in Carrollton and the Robert Johnson Birthplace in Hazlehurst have been placed on the Mississippi Heritage Trust's 2003 list of Mississippi's 10 Most Endangered Historic Places. The list is based on nominations from the public. Evidence of rapid deterioration is taken into consideration. The list was released Thursday. In the past, Keesler Bridge and the Hotel Irving, now the Alluvian in Greenwood, were named to the list, as was the town of Carrollton. The J.Z. George Law Office, which is believed to have been built in 1838, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is significant for its association with James Z. George, who was the state's most dynamic leader during the Reconstruction era. George set up his law practice in the building and occupied it through his long career, which included serving as chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee in 1875. He became chief justice of the state Supreme Court in 1879. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1881 to 1897. George is credited with helping to draft the 1890 state constitution. Robert Johnson's birthplace is believed to have built in 1905. Johnson, a legendary Delta bluesman, is credited by many as the father of modern rock-and-roll music. His music has been played by such artists as Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones and many others. The birthplace was moved nearly a mile from its original location when an interstate highway was constructed.
