Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/yIB.2ACE/962 Message Board Post: My GGGGGM was Mary McAnulty (1784-1863), who married William Vance (1786-1844) in SC and subsequently settled in what is now Calhoun County ( then, Chickasaw County) MS in the early 1840’s. This family is well documented by William McCain in his books. McCain indicates that one of William Vance’s brothers, John Vance may have moved to Carroll County, MS after 1840. In the December, 1995 edition of the Chester District (SC) Genealogical Society Bulletin there is an article submitted by W.E. Vance of Grenada MS in which he states that his GGGGF John P. Vance moved to Carroll Co. MS by 1836. He states that John P. Vance had brothers William, James Alexander, Jr. and Adam (b. PA ca. 1781) and three unnamed daughters; and that their father James Alexander Vance was born ca. 1755 in Ireland or PA.. He also states that this John P. Vance married Isabella McAnulty. Their children are given in this source as William, James, John G., George, Elizabeth and Mary. The federal Censuses of 1850 and 1860 show John Vance and his children in Carroll Co., MS. These records indicate that both John Vance and his wife, Isabella Vance, were born in SC in 1795. The marriage records of the same county show the various marriages of their children. In addition, the 1860 census shows a Robert McNulty (b. 1786 in SC) living with William M.C. Vance (John Vance’s son). The will abstract book for Carroll Co., MS indicates that on May 16, 1864, Robert McNulty gave a nuncupative will which named as his heirs his sisters Isabella Vance and Polly Vance. My GGGGGM Mary Vance, wife of William Vance died on November 29, 1863. Such a will is an oral will given before witnesses in situations where that testator is too ill to wait on a formal documentation. It is possible that he may not have known of Mary Vance’s death. I have found no definitive record of Robert’s whereabouts prior to 1860. The 1790 census of SC shows a James Vance in Camden District, York Co. page 28. The 1800 census of Chester Co., SC shows James Vaunce on page 77 along with, among others, Ehuphwel (prob. Churchill) Carter, John Carter and Robert and Walter Tindale. There are no McAnultys shown. The 1810 census of Chester Co., SC shows Aaron McNulty on page 259. On this same page are James Vance, Thomas Carter, Thomas Knight, Henry Mitchel, Charles H. Sims, Joseph Yarbrough. The land records for Chester Co., SC indicate that, in 1818. James Vance, Sr. sold contiguous tracts of land to John, Adam and James Vance and a separate tract to William. The 1820 census shows Betsy McNulty near William Vance. I believe that all of these tracts were in the Sealy’s Creek ( a tributary of Sandy Creek/River) area which would be near Baton Rouge, SC.. The 1830 census for Chester Co., SC shows E. McAnulty on page 313 and A. Vance on page 307. John and William Vance were, by then, in Pickens Co., AL. I am pursuing a theory that Isabella, Mary and Robert McAnulty were siblings and were born in SC. Any thoughts or corrections would be appreciated.
