High on the hill across from the Galey and Tate stores was a big home that had in its day been fine but time and changes hhad taken a toil on it. Next, on the left was vacant for many years, then a house was built and some of the Galey family lived there. Across the street was a white building which housed the Masonic lodge and doubled as a theatre on weekends. Movies were shown and the tape was always breaking and lights would have to come on while they repaired the tape. FUN TIMES! Back to the right side of the street was another general store which also housed the post office. John Jones owned this store and since my dad was a substitute mail carrier and I always went with him on his route, I was a frequent customer in this store. At the end of his front counter there was a flat surface with two stools where we as small children always got to take a turn whirling round and round on the stools. Mr. Jones even had some "dry goods". We loved looking through the clothes and shoes and I remember a pair of shoes that was bought for me in that store was my very favorite and I think I continued to try to wear them after they became too small for my feet. Across the street from Mr. Jones' store there was a house and one of my school friends lived there. It was so exciting when I got to spend the night with her "in town". All this was during the years 1941-1955. The state road bypasses Blackhawk now. It goes behind the buildings on the left side of the street but I make the detour and go thru "town" every chance I get. Sorry this turned out like it did but I had to stop and start several times and my memories just keep coming.

I attended the school at BlackHawk until the 9th grade and then we went to school in Vaiden,Ms. Growing up nearby, I spent many hours with my dad in the little stores (they seemed big to me back then). I'm not sure which was the Brewer building but let me tell you a little about the stores as I remember them. As you came down the little hill from the school to Blackhawk there was a service station owned and operated by the Galey family. There was always a lot of the family around as well as other people in the community. There was a shed that extended from the building out to cover the gas pump. Everyone sat around on the couple or three straight chairs and probably a wooded drink case or two would be turned on the side so it could be used to sit on. I remember you had to pump the gas up in the tank where it would register the gallons ( held about 5 gallons, I think) and from there it could be pumped in the vehicles. I remember most people bought only a dollar's worth or maybe 2. I am still friends with some of this family. The next building on the right was a general store owned and operated by Leon and Clementine Tate. We were friends with them and I always got a free coke and maybe a slice of cheese or on special occasions, a bar of candy was a treat. They had a refrigerated meat display and they sold sliced cheese, bologna, ham and possibly other things I can't remember. You could buy just about anythink you needed for the farm and the house in there. I saw new things everytime I went inside. At one time there was a little side store built on

In 1840, Edward Streaters sons, ( two of the five Streater brothers, heirs to the plantation and some one hundred slaves at one time) moved their caucasian children and select slaves, and caucasian children to Barbour Co., Alabma. All men were freed Jan 1st, 1863, by President Lincoln. Many black Streaters lived in Barbour Co.,Ala., in 1863. When they were freed, some stayed and some moved apparently to Mississippi.
