Thanks Wanda, I have found it somewhat amazing how closely related many of the families and descendants of early Attala County's elders are. My g grandmother, Nancy Matilda Guess Cummins is another example. She was the daughter of Martin B. Guess and Nancy Brister. Having "very large" families may have something to do with it. :) Good to hear from you, Doug> From: kwlentz@bellsouth.net> To: msattala@rootsweb.com> Date: Wed, 4 Feb 2009 11:35:47 -0500> Subject: Re: [MSATTALA] Moses T. "Having "very large" families may have something to do with it." I Doug, I would add to "very large families," the fact that those same families who arrived in Attala in the 1830s - 1840s tended to stay in Attala thereby diminishing the number of "new prospective" spouses, outside the family, and maintaining the focus on family cousins, nephews, etc. for spouses; and many of those same early families would follow their neighbors from eastern seaboard communities to lands west upon hearing from the first of their neighbors to move to Attala how attractive property prices and tillable soils were, particularly right after government land sales begin in the early 1830s, and to that, I would add that, after the Civil War, many of those same families tended to migrate together further west (Texas, etc.) for the same reasons they may have originally moved to Attala. Contrary to today, families simply stuck together then and needed each other to manage the farms, clear the acreage, etc. I'll bet others on this board have other ideas on why so many Attala families are so closely related ??
