This has been posted before about about the Southern Campaign American Revolutionary Pension statements. I only know of one Rev. War Veteran that's buried in Attala County. No doubt there are others. Click on this site for the roster/pension statements: http://southerncampaign.org/pen/index.htm Doug
Doug, I am aware that there are many sons and daughters of Revolutionary War soldiers, but was unaware that a genuine Revolutionary War Soldier was buried in Attala County. From my own review of the Attala County Cemetery Book, it would be my guess that yours may be the only Revolutionary War Soldier resting in Attala County. Who might that veteran be and in what cemetery does he rest? Dear Dennis, We've talked before. Possibly this is of interest. Joel Vincent Harvey, Sr. (1764-1836) was a confirmed Revolutionary War Veteran. As you know, it is believed that his son, Joel Vincent Harvey, Jr. (1788-1871; who married Mary Snow), who was an early Primitive Baptist Preacher to Kosciusko and Attala County, is generally believed/reportedly buried in Attala County, the old cemetery location being an unknown/lost postal location (somewhere up around Ethel--reportedly he died 30 Nov 1871 in the old Wells Community of Attala Co., MS). His early ministry is documented here and there in early Attala County papers and historical records. I believe his Revolutionary War father (Joel, Sr.) is actually buried in south Mississippi, probably in Copiah or Lawrence County. Dudley William Harvey (1818-1900) married Elizabeth "Betty" Locke, both being in my direct line and both are buried at Providence Primitive Baptist Church in northwest Attala County. "Dud" is mentioned a time or two in the Jason Niles' Diary, as is his father, Joel. Dudley was the son of Joel, Jr. Note the large number of related HARVEY family members included in the early 1840 and 1841 Censuses for Attala. At any rate, this is an authentic Revolutionary War family line which had a strong presence in Attala County. Best regards, Walter Goss Montgomery, AL ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dennis K. Dear Walter, When you said in your note, ". . .it is believed that his son, Joel Vincent Harvey, Jr. (1788-1871; who married Mary Snow), who was an early Primitive Baptist Preacher to Kosciusko and Attala County. . ." you reminded me that in my own Harvey research, I also was uncertain if Joel Jr. "was an early Primitive Baptist Preacher." The reason being that in the literature, the name "Joel Harvey," in reference to a PB Preacher, appears many times without either Sr. or Jr. appearing after it. I just looked over my paper Harvey files; the bibles, et al. and could not find anything that pinned down whether Joel Jr. was a PB minister. So, I turned to my copy of HISTORY OF THE PRIMITIVE BAPTISTS OF MISSISSIPPI by Benjamin Griffin (of Holmes County, Mississippi, published in 1853 and found nothing confirming that Joel Harvey Jr. was a PB Minister, but many references to "J Harvey," "Joel Harvey" as "brother" and "Elder" in the 1843, 1845 time frame, but again, nothing to distinguish Sr. from Jr. Like you, Walter, I have always taken it as a given that Sr. was a PB Minister, and have always been uncertain if Jr. ever rose to the rank of Minister. Have you in your files any primary source documents that irrefutably verify that Sr. was a PB minister and tell us to what level in the PB Church Jr. rose to? Good to hear from you again.
