    3. I know there are those researching the Hodges line, a line I have been working on for twenty five years plus. Until recently I could not get any further back than my great grandfather Charles H. Hodges who was born in 1856-7, and there was a reason. Very early in my research I had been told that his father's name was Isora Hodges, (no name given for his wife) and I have spent al these years looking for Isora. HAS ANYONE EVER FOUND ISORA HODGES? I had the names of most of Charles H. Hodges's siblings but was not sure of the order of birth, except for the two youngest. A year or so ago, I found in one of my boxes of notes a half sheet of paper, now yellow with age, on which I had written some info I had gleaned from the 1880 Attala County (Mitchell's Mill) Census, and it read: Hodges, Jenette, age 56, b. 1824 in SC, Father b. SC, Mother b. TN Hodges, Nancy J. age 19, b. 1861, Father b. SC, Mother b. SC Hodges, Thomas G., age 15, b. 1865, Father b. SC, Mother b. SC I had no idea who this Jenette was, but I did know who Nancy and Thomas were. They were two of the siblings of my great grandfather, Charles H. Hodges. I knew also who they later married and the names of many of their ancestors. I figured that if these two children were living in one household with someone named Jenette, she was their mother!! And this was the first time I ever had a hint of the first name of my g-g-grandmother! Though I had had this scrap of paper for several years, I never could find anywhere to put them. Now if her name was Jenette, she must have married the one I had always thought was named "Isora." I had checked EVERYWHERE for him and came up empty every time! So I decided to try another name, but where do I start? I went to the 1870 Choctaw County (Montevista) Census to look for something for someone else on one of the Lists, and the Hodges family literally jumped off the page at me. My Hodges family! There she was with ALL her children in the correct order of birth. (See how it helps to help someone else??) This is what I found: Hodge(s) Jenetta, age 46 b. KY Hodges, John J., age 23, b. MS Hodges, James M(adison), age 20 b. MS Hodges, William D., age 17 b. MS Hodges, Charles H(enry), b. age 14, b. MS Hodges, Nancy J., age 9, b. MS Hodges, Thomas G., age 5, b. MS I knew there was one discrepancy - Jennette's place of birth, but I wasn't through. The remainder of the information I had was a good match, but I wasn't finished yet because I did not have the father's name. I knew that if Thomas G. Hodges was born in 1865, his father - whoever he was - had to be living with the family at least part of 1865. I went to the 1860 Choctaw County (Belfontaine) Census to look for the father of these children. I was really getting excited by now! This is what I found: Hodges, Drury, age 36, farmer, b. SC Hodges, Jennalia, age 37 b. Ky (there is the Ky birthplace again.) Hodges, John J., age 13, b. MS Hodges, James M., age 10, b. MS Hodges, William D., age 8, b. MS Hodges, Charles H., age 4, b. MS Hodges, Ira Z, age 1, b. MS (Note that Ira Z. is not in the 1870 nor 1880 census. He most likely died as an infant, since their methods of health were so poor in those days.) Going back ten more years to the 1850 Choctaw County (Western Division) I found the following: Hodges, Drury, age 25, farmer, b. MS (an error since he was b. SC) Hodges, Jenetty, age 26, b. MS (looks as though the census taker ASSUMED their places of birth) Hodges, John, age 4, b. MS Hodges, James, age 1, b. MS Cairo (no surname) farm laborer So, it looks like the name of my great-great-grandfather was a very well-used name in the Hodges family, that of DRURY, and not Isora, unless of course Isora was his middle name. Since he is shown in the 1850 and the 1860 censuses, and he was around to father his last child in 1865, he must have died around the end of the Civil War. Could he have been in the War and did not survive it? Do any of you know? If any of you are researching this family, or one which connects to it, please write to me and we will compare notes. Thank you so much. Mozelle P. Chason

    3. Mozelle, Look at this 1850 census again... I get a different last name here... and after much looking I get 23 years old for Drewry but his age seems to change on each census so which is correct. I know that I should say that I am sorry for the missunderstanding that I had with you a few year's ago for I know that we do have lot's of Data that we can compare... O. D. McElroy ================================================= 1850 Census Choctaw County, Mississippi. Subdivision-23. 1 October 1850. Image-19 of Ancestry.Com. 140/140 HODGES, Drewry(23)MS. [M]. Jennetty(26)MS. [F]. John(04)MS. [M]. James(01)MS. [M]. David(18)MS. [M]. I think that the above David(18) is a brother of Drewry??? ================================================= ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mozelle Chason" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, July 26, 2004 8:32 PM Subject: [MSATTALA] Hodges Going back ten more years to the 1850 Choctaw County (Western Division) I found the following: Hodges, Drury, age 25, farmer, b.
