As most of you know, most of the court house records in Lexington county were burned during the Civil War. Some Harmon family records survived, but the records of the Christian Harmon family were totally lost. Unfortunately that is the family that migrated to Attala County. For years I and other Harmon researchers have searched to no avail for records on this family.. Most of these people belonged to St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Lexington County South Carolina. Looking at birth records not too long ago we noted that the church had a custom of using aunts and uncles as sponsors for new born children.. There was our solution to finding who were brothers and sisters. From the early book "Annals of Newberry" there is a notation "Frederick and Jacob, Harmon brothers, married Wise sisters and migrated to Attala County Ms." I corresponded with Ellen Pettit in June 2000. She told me that during conversations with Dr. Mildred Stingley in the nursing home there that she was told George Harmon was the son of Christian Harmon. With these 2 bits of information and church records we have begun to put together the ancestor charts, brothers and sisters of Attala Counties early Harmon families. It is not quite complete yet, but if interested Harmon researchers will contact me it would be greatly appreciated. Marvin The people involved: John H.
