Barbara, See message immediately below. As Bernice points out, Susan's husband is listed on the preceding page on the image she is viewing. But, she indicates that the household numbers are listed in a peculiar manner. Read her message and I will continue with a new explanation below that. Everette ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, June 14, 2004 11:04 AM Subject: Susan Kellum Unfortunately I deleted all the messages re Susan Kellum before I realized that I would need the correspondent & address to send my findings. I have handwritten all the Attala county censuses from microfilm that I purchased and this is what I found for the 1880 Attala Census regarding Susan Kellum(n). In the first place, Susan is the first name listed on page 44, but her husband, Caleb, is the last person listed on the previous page. I found no irregularity in the census as was mentioned by the correspondent. Caleb & Susan lived in household 351/351 with their 6 children. There is irregularity in the household numbers (the next household listed is 358, the next 359, 361, 362, 365, 372 etc.) and I don't know why that should be so, but that is what the microfilm shows. Perhaps the problem is in the version that the correspondent is using and human error has entered into the listing. My copy of the 1880 Attala County Census does not raise any questions. I stated that their was nothing unusual about the census image at ancestry.com. On closer inspection, that was not the case. There is an asterisk along side HH #351. The notation at the top of the page indicates that these "enumerations were listed on the wrong page by mistake." Which is the explanation for everything. Bernice indicates that Caleb, Susan's husband was listed on the prior page. This was not true for the ancestry.com image. But, I took note that at ancestry page 43 ends with HH #387 and no Caleb. Page 45 begins with the balance of HH #387. I found Caleb Kellun listed on page 40 as being the head of household #351. At the bottom of this page is a notation by the enumerator to the effect that the balance of this family can be found on page 44. So, human error on the part of the enumerator caused this anomaly. I misspoke earlier when I proclaimed Susan as head of household because she is clearly shown as 'wife'. So the complete household (#351) includes Caleb Kellum, a white, male farmer born in Miss and whose parents were born in Miss; his wife, Susan, his son, Bailey and the children they share. It appears that in some instances presenters of the census images have tried to correct the problem and in others they did not. Everette
