In the 1880 Attala Census for Center, approximately 1680 people are listed in the household of Susan Kellun. They seem to be in family groups. Can anyone explain this to me? Barbara

I have no idea why it should be, unless she employed all those folks in some way, something like a big lumber camp with transit workers living in community housing? The name Center might imply some sort of center, I've wondered about the name as the location certainly wasn't in the Center of Attala. bob gilbert
Barbara, It is certainly not likely that so many people lived in a single household. The reference to 1680 people is likely the total count for the individuals enumerated in a particular Enumeration District. However, I was unable to locate Susan Kellum in the 1880 census. Perhaps if you could provide the Attala County researchers with the Enumeration District, Page number and Household number where you found Susan, maybe someone could be of assistance. Also, in what format (online?) are you viewing the census image? Page 190 D Beat 19 Susan Kellun is family # 351/351 the next household is 352/352 On the Ancestry.com the page is 44 of 61 in Beat 19, and the households are numbered. When I checked the familysearch.org on the this census it was listed under the head of household Susan Kellum. But on checking Ancestry.com census images the house holds are #.
