Burney age 25 wife; S.B. age 7 son; F.R. age 18 son (actually stepson of V.A.) son of 1st wife Martha); S.J.(Sarah Jane) age 4 dau.; H.A.(Hettie Ann) dau age 2. 2nd Application for Civil War pension signed Mrs. S.J. Massey. 3rd Affidavit of Applicant for Letters of Administration (after death of John Massey in 1910 signed by Mrs. S.J. Massey. 3rd Sarah Jane is buried in Eylua Meth.Cemetery in Bowie County,Tx. She lived with her daughter Wilma & husband Homer A. Kirby Sarah birth date on the headstone is Sept.29,1875 - died Jan. 24, 1962. this date is also on her death certifiate and mother listed as Annie McCool information given by Mrs H.W. Hey Gigi, Happy to have you join in the conversation. The more, the better. Handwriting was often notoriously bad back in those days, just as we all know. Everything that I have personally seen appears to indicate the wife of Joel Vincent Harvey, Sr. was Nancy Amsi Clayton of Virginia. Her parents were reportedly John Willis Clayton and Mary Pettis, also originally of Virginia. Nancy Amsi Clayton reportedly died in Choctaw Co., MS. Still, the CLAYTON versus CLAYTOR (of New Hope Baptist Cemetery) comparison is most interesting. Unless there are written church records which identify the extent and names of the unknown gravesites, I don't know how we could possibly reconcile one way or the other. But clearly you have raised an interesting topic for further discussion. I do know that Joel Harvey was known to have preached some at Pilgrim's Rest Baptist Church at one point. Jasper Hickman Harvey was the son of Joel Vincent Harvey, Jr. According to my records, Joel, Sr., did not have a son named Jasper Harvey. However, to further confuse matters, Jasper Hickman Harvey did have a son named Jasper N. Harvey b. abt 1837 in MS who was married to Martha C. Bowles (see 1880 Northeast Attala Co., MS Census). Therefore, Jasper N. Harvey was the "grandson" of Joel Vincent Harvey, Jr. Accordingly, we have the following record according to the KOSCIUSKO-ATTALA HISTORY (by the Kosciusko-Attala Historical Society), p. 158: "He [Joel--"Joel N."??? or Joel V.?--"was in Attala County before 1840"], his son Jasper Harvey and his nephew Elder Louis [Lewis?] Harvey were early ministers to Oak Ridge Church. Jasper was also a coroner and Ranger." Based on the wording therein, this appears to be a possible reference to Joel, Jr., his son Jasper Hickman Harvey, and a nephew, Louis [Lewis?] Harvey. Again, please note the relevant ages--particularly Jasper N. Harvey, who was not born until about 1837 (reportedly b: 04 Apr 1837) and Joel, Sr., who died in 1836. Catherine Caty Harvey (b: abt 1800 in Kentucky, daughter of Joel, Sr., and sister of Joel, Jr.) and John Jack Harvey had a son named L. W. Harvey (L. G. W. Harvey, who married Sarah A. UNKNOWN) born about 1822 in Mississippi, presumably down in south Mississippi prior to the family's move to Attala County. Reportedly, Lewis G. W. Harvey was a Primitive Baptist minister and a physician who left Mississippi and was in Louisiana and then Liberty Co., TX (abt 1860) and then Angelina Co., TX, Erath and Mills Co., TX. Lewis G. W. Harvey was a brother to George Barnett Harvey of Christian Co., KY and later of Choctaw/Attala Co., MS by 1839. More from the KOSCIUSKO-ATTALA HISTORY: "Oak Ridge Primitive Baptist Church has had three buildings, with the third burning in 1939. Oak Ridge Christian Church was organized around 1924, and in 1939 was holding services in the former schoolhouse. Oak Ridge Cemetery is located at Oak Ridge Church today." Dear Anna, I have a couple questions for you. 1. What proof do you have that Sarah J. Burney was only eleven years old when she married John H. Massey? I found one S.J. Massey who matches "your" Sarah Jane in age, but I also found another Sarah Jane Burney who was born 1856, the same year as John H. Massey. 2. What documentation do you have that Sarah Jane's parents were Delitha Veana McCool and Berry Holland Burney? Is the information in a Bible record or where? If you will answer these questions as quickly as you can, I will continue on my trail for you. Dear Dennis, So good to hear from you, again. And thank you for sharing some additional information. I did not have the reference re HISTORY OF THE PRIMITIVE BAPTISTS OF MISSISSIPPI (1853) by Benjamin Griffin. I guess they should have a copy at the Mississippi College Library. I thank you for that. As you say, I've spent a lot of time thinking about and researching the HARVEY family line--particularly the various references to their Primitive Baptist ministry. I guess my chief observation is deductive in nature, i.e., Joel Vincent Harvey, Sr. died in 1836. This date is confirmed via the HARVEY FAMILY BIBLE, as follows: "Joe Harvey Senr: Husband of the above named Nancy Clayton was born 1764 died at the age of 72--" [i.e., 1836] and that point in time roughly appears to be the same timeframe when a number of the remaining younger HARVEY family members moved up from south Mississippi into Attala County following the Choctaw Cessions of 1833. According to Fannie Coleman's scrapbook: "Soon after the formation of the town [Kosciusko] in 1835, the Primitive Baptists, being quite numerous among the early settlers, organized and built a house of worship about one-half mile southeast of Kosciusko. Therefore, the early Attala County references to Joel Harvey, of which there are several, would almost certainly have to be references to Joel Vincent Harvey, Jr. (1788-1871), his father having been deceased by that point in time. One such reference source is THE HISTORY OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH KOSCIUSKO, MISSISSIPPI, 1848-1998, by Anne Hughes Porter, Church Historian, and the Church Sesquicentennial History Committee, pp. 20-21: "Again in 1854, it was removed . . . . Joel Harvey, a Primitive Baptist minister, sometimes preached in the courthouse, which was a small brick building. . . . Hello Dennis, Several years ago while taking pictures of our family elders graves at Doty Springs cemetery. We were also looking for military vets that was also buried there. We found (Not that it was actually lost.) the grave of John Harmon Shumaker was just a few yards from my g grandparent's graves. His personal info was inscribed on a bronze surface plaque.
