Another interesting connection: There was a Henderson family who lived in our neighborhood (Sunflower County) for fifty or more years, and the daughter and I tried to "claim kinship" through the Hendersons, to no avail. Then I learned that they come from the Rachel Brister and Wiley Green line, and I come from the Serena Guess and Samuel Brister line, making us cousins, as we suspected. Though my mother was very fond of Mrs. Henderson, she never knew they were cousins! I was able to tell one of the Henderson sons, a retired dentist from W. Monroe, LA that we were cousins. He was surprised, and when I mentioned Samuel Brister, he knew. By the way, the retired dentist and now his son was/is my daughter's dentist in W. Monroe! They did not know that she was my daughter until she told them. It is a small world. Mozelle On Feb 4, 2009, at 5:19 PM, Dennis K. Boswell wrote: > Vicki, small world indeed. Vicki, small world indeed. The Wiley Green you mentioned, husband of Rachel Green, traveled from Lawrence County with Edmond Brister and settled in Attala County in December of 1830 where they constructed their first Attala County homes. "Having "very large" families may have something to do with it." I Doug, I would add to "very large families," the fact that those same families who arrived in Attala in the 1830s - 1840s tended to stay in Attala thereby diminishing the number of "new prospective" spouses, outside the family, and maintaining the focus on family cousins, nephews, etc. for spouses; and many of those same early families would follow their neighbors from eastern seaboard communities to lands west upon hearing from the first of their neighbors to move to Attala how attractive property prices and tillable soils were, particularly right after government land sales begin in the early 1830s, and to that, I would add that, after the Civil War, many of those same families tended to migrate together further west (Texas, etc.) for the same reasons they may have originally moved to Attala. Contrary to today, families simply stuck together then and needed each other to manage the farms, clear the acreage, etc. I'll bet others on this board have other ideas on why so many Attala families are so closely related ?? Thanks Wanda, I have found it somewhat amazing how closely related many of the families and descendants of early Attala County's elders are. There are quite a few descendants of Moses Guess that migrated to MS and Attala County. Some of their descendants may like to read this........ I know this may not be helpful but my grandmother (Carmen Forrester b.1910 in Shady Grove) passed away in 2005 and one of her best friends lived across the street from her in Ethel. I just recently received a death certificate for one of my ancestors. The funeral home listed was John W. Brown. Has this funeral home renamed ? or does someone know what happens to old funeral home records ? This funeral home existed in 1952.
