    1. [MSATTALA] HUGH W. SMITH and NEW EMAIL ADDRESS
    2. Ellen Pettit
    3. Hi June......I do have a copy of Hugh W. Smith's obit from an original newspaper clipping which was pasted inside the front cover of a small Bible owned by my grandfather, Charles Franklin Oakes. He was the son of Margaret Emily Smith, daughter of Hugh W. Smith. The copy is legible but yellowed. I will be glad to scan and send to you. Somewhere I have a copy of the obit for Gatsa Ann Simpson Smith, his wife. I do have the 1960 typewritten transcriptions typed by me from the originals. I don't know how to change my address to 'msattala@rootsweb.com' but I have a new email address: Robilyn eopettit@hughes.net Thanks.........Ellen Oakes Pettit

    1. [MSATTALA] Sunflower Plantation Voter Registrations
    2. Mozelle Chason
    3. Hello there, Jane! Good to hear from you. My dear, I have never seen a list of those African Americans living on Sunflower Plantation during that time frame. The only thing I know is that there were sharecropper houses for the families, one for each 20 acres, and there are 4000 acres. That would be about 200 houses before about 1939 when the new houses, etc. were built and sold to white families. There were about 100 White families living in those houses. I do not have a list of voters during that time frame, mainly because most of them couldn't get enough money to pay the poll tax which was required to vote. Of the lists I have, there were only two or three African Americans registered to vote. I hope this gives you something to go on. Mozelle

    2. Jeannie
    3. I have found out that John Christopher Columbus Gregory born 07/28/188 and Samuel Christopher Gregory are both the same person. Parents John Christopher Gregory and Electrra Phinnia Clementine Peeler Gregory of Attala County, Mississippi. When he was born his mother and father named him John Christopher Columbus Gregory. His grandpa Peeler did not like the name and called him Sambo. Birth certificates were not in Mississippi till 1906. Lucille Gregory Cohan has the family bible and in it shows the name of John Christopher Columbus Gregory. She is his daughter. By 1906 he was called Sam and Samuel was a family name in the Peeler family. The error in the birth certificate is noted in the family bible. 1. [MSATTALA] Guyest, Guest, Guess Surname
    2. Doug. Cummins
    3. Changed spelling of the Guyest, Guest, Guess surname.   Morgan Guess: Born 28 Aug 1773 in Surry, NC and died 8 Feb 1853 in Attala County, MS. Morgan was named after his grand mother Sarah Morgan. Married Nancy Jane Walker of Cork, Ireland, daughter of Simon Walker. Jane was born 1764 and died and buried about 1825 in Copiah County, MS. He served in the War of 1812 with Col. Phillip’s 36th TN Regiment from Franklin County. He married Nancy Hendry, the daughter of Micajah Hendry 24 Nov 1825 in Copiah County, MS. She was previously married to John Crawford and a Greer. He died on 08 February 1853 in Attala County, MS at age 79. Morgan was registered in Copiah County, MS 1850 census at age 77 born in NC, occupation: blacksmith. Morgan's son, Zebadiah had a will, it is available in will book B, page 271, Probated in 1878 in the County Court House, Kosciusko, MS.  It is believed that Morgan Guess is buried in the Guess Grave Yard on his son Zebediah's old home place, 4 miles of West, Miss and 3 miles of Old Lebanon Primitive Baptist Church. Three generations of the family were buried there.   It appears that the surname spelling of Guest to Guess occurred when this family moved to Mississippi.   Should anyone have information that this is incorrect I stand corrected.   Please advise,   Doug Cummins Pensacola, FL

    3. Hi, Not to be a killjoy, but the spelling of "Guest" is different from "Guess". Are we certain that the descendents changed the spelling? I know there is a Guest family living not far from Toccoa, GA. I just thought that accuracy could be important, for future genealogists. Vickie, Emma Louise Cherry was my greatgreatgrandmother. I'd love to "talk" with you and anyone else who wants to exchange Cherry, Ellard, and Ingram info. I'll email you privately. 1. [MSATTALA] (MSATTALA) Moses T. Guess (Guess of Attala County)
    2. Ellen Pettit
    3. PLEASE NOTE MY NEW EMAIL ADDRESS: Ellen (Robilyn) Pettit eopettit@hughes.net Thanks Doug Cummins and all who have shared comments on our Moses Guest. About 12 years ago, my husband and I went to Toccoa, GA and to the grave of Moses Guest, marked with a DAR marker. We were able to visit with Mr. Charley Marvin Taylor who at that time owned the property where Moses Guest was buried. Mr. Taylor lived across the road from the gravesite. He shared with us that his grandfather attended the funeral of Moses Guest. The GUEST-GUESS AND RELATED FAMILIES book by Alta Louise Biggs Martin, pages 32 and 33 have newspaper clippings with pictures, dated November 4, 1971 and October 29, 1971 and the articles regarding the marking of the grave by the Toccoa DAR Chapter. I have pictures of the monument that we made. However, I have been told that the grave was marked twice because of vandalism to the first marker. There were no other graves visible but supposedly there were other graves visible in earlier years. The grave is suppose to be located in Franklin County very near Stephens Co., GA. I would like to have scans of the pictures of the grave marker placed by the SAR in 2003.
