    3. Hi Doug, If by "access" you mean on-line access, I don't think either the S-H or "church" archives are available on-line - at least that was my impression from the last time I did any serious on-site research in Attala County. I do know that Ann Breedlove has microfilm copies of a good number of S-H and other newspapers, ca. 1800s, right in the library, along with microfilm viewers. As for church archives, my own experience suggests that for 1800s era records - they have been passed down over the years through the hands of Church officers and families long associated with each individual church. Tracking down those people who now possess such records can only be done by good legwork and telephone time and or direct contact with today's church officials. I also recall that the MDAH in Jackson and (if I remember correctly) the Special Collections Depts in Starkville and Oxford have had some church records passed to them over the years. Based on my own experience, I would start by posting on one of the Attala boards the name of the church you are interested in and the type of records you seek access to and also include mention of the names of that church's parishioners you have an interest in researching unless, of course, your interest is in the history of the church itself - which, for most churches, may be found in the Attala County Library's holdings. Hope this helps out, Doug. Dennis At 06:54 AM 11/29/2009, Doug. Cummins wrote: >Hey Betty, > >Were you able to view the 1920-30 Attala censuses? 3. Hey Betty, Were you able to view the 1920-30 Attala censuses? They are more informative than earlier ones. Obtaining access to the Star Herald and church archives in Attala County has been a problem. If there is someone out there that can get me squared away on these two issues, call me at doug_36c@yahoo.com 24/7. 3. The cemetery is not listed among Attala County Cemeteries but is located within the county. You can find a copy of the Attala County Road map at http://www.gomdot.com/Divisions/IntermodalPlanning/resources/Maps/CountyHighwayMaps.aspx just click on the county name and you can copy the map in pdf format. From US Hwy 55, exit 146, follow State Hwy 24 east for about 1 1/2 miles, turn left on County Rd #4101. At about 1 mile, turn Rt on #4102 for about 1/2 mile, the cemetery should be on the north [left] side of the road. If the church still exists, it should be on the right, but nearer the last intersection. This is situated in Section 23 of T13N - R4E. Perhaps someone living in the area could visit the cemetery for you. 1. [MSATTALA] New Banyon Church cemetery records
    2. Hi, I am searching for church/cemetery death records for my gr gr grandmother, Bettie Guyton McMullen Jenkins Greer and her last husband, Simon Greer; this is an African American family who lived in Newport. Bettie was born about 1877 in MS and died sometime between 1947 and 1953 in MS; Simon was born about 1866 in MS and died about 1947 in MS. Both are supposedly buried in the New Banyon Church old cemetery. Does anyone have information about this church/cemetery? Based on oral history, Simon Greer was killed when his mule ran into a swarm of bees and stomped him to death. Were there any newspapers in publication during this time period that would have included obituaries for African Americans? Thank you, Dawnna

I have to make time to visit there sometime. I have never been. The town of Granbury, Texas where I live has a nicely preserved old town square. Almost all of the buildings on the square, including the courthouse, have a state of Texas Historical marker on them. The whole town square is (or was at one time) the only complete historical town square in the National Register of Historical Places. The old buildings have been repaired and restored and contain several shops, hotels, restaurants and live entertainment theaters and plays now. With Lake Granbury a couple of blocks away, it is a large tourist draw for this part of the country. General Hiram Granbury, the Southern Civil War General who was killed at the battle of Franklin, Tenn is buried there, as is Elizabeth Crockett, wife of Davy Crocket who was killed defending the Alamo. Elizabeth Crockett and her son were awarded several acres of land in Hood County, near Granbury, for his sacrifice at the Alamo. There is lots of History in the area. I would expect Kosciusko would be an interesting place to visit for us that had past family living around there. For a 7th grade Texas History project, my son, who is a freshman in college this year, Documented all the Texas Historical Markers in Hood County (named for Civil war General John Bell Hood) We copied the text from the markers and used photos that I took at each location and made a Powerpoint presentation. He received an A+ on it. I will forward it to anyone that might be interested. I became aware of a wealth of historical knowledge while dinning on their famous "Baby-Back Ribs". You can see most of the old buildings that line the square and get a clear view of the 1894 red brick Court House, the civil war statue and of course and the original red clay bricks that once lined most the narrow streets in Attala County. Just a few blocks to the east of the Rib Alley Restaurant is an excellent source family genealogy, the Regional Library on Jefferson Street. Most days Mom-Sat a clerk will be available assist in your quest. So if your dining out, doing family research or both. You won't be disappointed on first or next visit to Attala County. --- On Fri, 9/25/09, msattala-request@rootsweb.com <msattala-request@rootsweb.com> wrote: > From: msattala-request@rootsweb.com <msattala-request@rootsweb.com> > Subject: MSATTALA Digest, Vol 4, Issue 50 > To: msattala@rootsweb.com > Date: Friday, September 25, 2009, 3:00 AM > > > Today's Topics: > > 1.
