Robert, regarding "Tubb," you might want to subscribe to CHOCTAW-SOUTHEAST-L@rootsweb.com and ask your question. There are many on that web site who speak Choctaw fluently. I have no doubt someone would be able to help you as they have me on so many past occasions. Robert, I have ancestors who came to Texas very early, too. Isham Burnett came from Lincoln County, Tennessee to Red River County, Texas in 1840, while it was still a Republic. Texas Land Office records are available online. I'm sure you know that Texas land records are kept separate from the US because Texas never ceded its public lands to the US. Part of the agreement for statehood, I think. My Attala ancestors were Stuckeys mostly. One BLM record shows one of them as early as 1837 and several in 1841 in Attala. Some of them came to Texas after statehood. The possible surname of your Attala ancestor's wife as "Tubb" makes me wonder if she was a Choctaw. In some records Native Americans in those parts were surnamed Tubby and Socky. I know of no way to find out for sure. I, too, am grateful to Everette and the others whose roots go back to Attala. At least five generations of my Stuckeys lived in Attala County!!! Holmes County is situated adjacent to Attala County on the west. The Big Black River is the boundary line between these two counties in this location. Please note that the above three land patents are the only patents acquired by Robert Walters on land in the State of Mississippi. As mentioned above, I believe Robert Walters made his home on the land described as being in Sections 18 and 19 of T14N, R7E. This is the Township in which the town of Kosciusko is located. You are correct Martha in that Attala County was created on December 23, 1833, from lands in the Choctaw Cession. I am interested in following the chain of title to the above described lands out of the patent and into successive owners. Since the courthouse in Kosciusco was destroyed by fire in 1858, and all records lost, I am just wondering if any records (or data) might have been kept in another place, covering title from patent date to 1858. Robert Walters was married when he was living in the area which became Attala and Yazoo Counties (1820-1835). His wife migrated with him to Texas, but we have never been able to determine her name, except to believe it is "Tubb". I doubt that I will ever find a marriage record, but I keep looking at every document I can find with the hope her name will show-up some place. Everett, Hope this gets thru. Sammie Jean Holley Day
Happy New Year to you Everett !!!!!! Once you had an Attala County map up with all the cemerteries shown where they were loacated. Do you still have a copy of that map ? I will gladly pay you for 2 of them. I hope so !! Thanks, Sincerely, Jean Holley Day
Hello Everette: And a Happy New Year to you, also. I am aware that the courthouse in Attala County had several fires through the years; and, insofar as I have been able to determine, there are no land records from the original Patent date until 1858. Do you know of any place where some records might have been stored and not lost in the fires? Several marriages and many land transactions in my family took place during the time period 1820-1858. I would like to find at least some of these records, if they exist. Do you know what the lawyers are doing when they examine title to lands from present day back to the original Patent? Many thanks, Everette. Robert B.
