Hello all, I have family in numerous cemeteries in Attala Co. and many of my relatives have passed since the census of cemeteries referred to in the recent correspondence. Given an threshold amount to make it feasible, it may be possible to pre-subscribe as a means to pay the cost of a current census of the cemeteries. Perhaps, we could contract with each church to survey the graves associated with their church. As a possible benefit to the churches of Attala Co. the cost of the subscription could go to maintenance of the cemeteries. J. Sims, b. A recent obit for Hughlee Frazier listed the place of burial as the Frazier-Underwood Cemetery at Dossville. I know Dossville is right on the Attala/Leake county line. I have never heard of this cemetery and wonder if anyone knows if it is in Leake county or Attala county. Is this the same as the County Line Cemetery?

I have been reading the posts regarding the Newport Cemeteries and it has occured to me that that may be where my GGreatgrandmother , Priscilla McElroy who is last recorded in Newport in the 1880 census , is buried. I have been looking for her in Sallis cemetery and have been unable to find her.Is there a list anywhere of the people buried In Newport ? I would love to see it if there is. molly -----Original Message----- From: Ed Brown [SMTP:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, April 07, 2004 8:17 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MSATTALA] Salem Cemetery << File: ATT00013.txt; charset = iso-8859-1 >>

This is the cemetery that remains from a no longer existing Salem Church. I'm never sure whether it was Salem Baptist or Salem Methodist Church. It seems today to be a community cemetery. This cemetery is no where near McCool. If this is the cemetery you are looking for, below are directions to locate it. >From Kosciusko take Hwy 12 west to McAdams, then turn left (south) on the road to Sallis. Continue on through Sallis until New Port. At the junction with Hwy 14 turn left (east). Then travel a half mile or so on Hwy 14 and turn right on a gravel road heading south again. Salem Cemetery is less than a mile on that gravel road. The cemetery is on both sides of that gravel road. The original (old section)-west side is full, so late 20th century burials are on the east side of that gravel road. On the way to Salem cemetery you'll past a cemetery on a hill on the left side of the road. Keep on going as that is McLean (McLain) cemetery. Salem is less than a half mile further down that gravel road. If this is not the cemetery you seek, I tried. Many of my kin are buried at Salem. Just a note in reference to the subject cemetery. The current land owner has installed two gates and barbwire fences across the road that leads to the cemetery. Several head of cows (About 30.) that are in a family way are being kept within these pastures. I understand the Attala County Road Dept. no longer maintain the access road, and it's primarily used for pulpwood truckers. I did not see any keep out signs. There are two hazards that were noted: 1. Cows during the calving season are protective of their young and they will charge you. 2. The creek bridge just before the cemetery is unsafe for car passage due to several broken and decayed wooden planking. Does anyone know one's legal rights as to right-of-way access to their family cemetery(s) in MS, particularly in Attala County. Thank you, Doug. Cummins .

Could someone give me directions to Salem Cemetery? Is it located outside of McCool in the Panhandle Community? Thanks, Gigi
Perhaps 'Heirs' would have been a more proper term if Maryganos left a will and the will specifically addressed the question of ownership of the book. Otherwise... But, irrespective, the book would not pass into the public domain until seventy years after the death of the author. So, we can either wait seventy years or we can attempt to obtain permission from Mrs. Fenwick's heirs. Mr. Eddie Fenwick's secretary is mistaken. There is absolutely no question but that the "Attala Mississippi Cemeteries" book is subject to the copyright laws of the United States. The copyright is clearly shown on the face plate as LCN 87-90930 TX2249140 2/1/88. It is true that the initial project of copying the cemeteries of Attala County was begun under the auspices of the Attala Historical Society but the majority of the cemeteries were copied by Maryganos McCool Fenwick and Billye Brown Akin. Ultimately, Mrs. Fenwick used her personal funds to have the cemetery transcriptions published and the Attala Historical Society did not participate in this endeavor. She no doubt copyrighted the material to protect her investment, at least until she was able to recover her initial investment. She sold the books for exactly the amount required to recover her investment, so profit was not a motive. But the fact remains, no matter what Mrs. Fenwick or Mrs. Akins's intent may have been, the material is copyrighted. In order to put the information on the Attala County web site, written permission would have to be obtained from a representative of the surviving relatives of Mrs. Edward Fenwick. As previously stated, the "Attala Mississippi Cemeteries" book is sold out and no additional copies are available. The majority of the cemeteries were copied in 1958 which means that even if we were successful in putting the information on the Internet, the information on the most recent burial would be almost fifty years old. But it is the early nineteenth and twentieth century listings that make this book so important, for in the ensuing fifty years many of the headstones have become illegible. Or, many of the transcription contain information taken from a Funeral Home marker where a headstone was never erected. On the Acknowledgements page of the published book, Mrs. Fenwick gave credit to a number of people that assisted with the project including not only those that copied cemeteries or provided information on cemeteries, but also to map-spotters, proof readers, etc. But, the person that was singled out as having made the greatest contribution for her work in setting up the computer print-out and the indexing for the book was Mrs. John Rimmer (Janice B.) Craft. Maryganos stated that without Janice Craft the book "would not have been possible". And the effort to obtain permission to post goes on... My aunt, Billye Brown Akins was one of the people who helped Marymaganus McCool Fenwick read and record the tombstones. She is deceased. It was my impression that these were collected to preserved the information for anyone interested. Akins and Fenwick put a DAR marker on their grandmother's grave that proved they were eligible to join the DAR. I have the picture of this Revolutionary grandfather. I can look this up in my papers. Knowing the two, I do not think there would be anyone who would mention anything about a copyright. Willie R.
