My Woods grandparents and several Sims great-uncles are buried as Doty Springs, as well as a host of cousins of their generation. My g-great grandfather Rev. Jonathan Sims and / or his father Rev. David Sims were said to have been pastors at Doty Springs. Two of Jonathan Sims sons who died relatively young are buried there. That one or both men had been pastors therer was unknown to me as a child growing up in the 1950's. A precious memory of Doty Springs was the Homecoming, I recall it as the 3rd Sunday in May, in which the day was spent eating and avoiding the hugs from my Mom and Dad's kin. I recall my Dad pointing out an older grave, that of a Jennings man. (He had a granddaughter married to one of the sons of La Velle Sanders.) It seems that the old man claimed a burial plot near the gate so he would be the first out on resurrection day. Dad says that they buried him as he wished and then moved the fence and gate back quite a way. Does the chuch still celebrate a homecoming? James Sims, b. Kosy 1948, raised in Pascagoula
Doug: This is great news. I've been told that my gggggrandfather, Uriah Barnett and his family, founded several churches in the central MS area. And.. I've been "looking" for this info for the past four years. Let me know when you are going to MS College and I might meet you there.... This is truly noteworthy...I found some info.on some of my other family in the Philadelphia library re: a Baptist church they attended in Neshoba County. They appeared to be devout and dedicated to the church until... they, and another family, were "excommunicated" because a teen-age member of both families "traded a horse on Sunday".. Those were evidenty the pformative days of the Primitive Baptists--where all the men wore beards and mostly dressed in black and the women sat together on the opposite side of the church from the men... I have an old photo of my ggggrandfather just like that... And, in some of his writings I have, he refers to "you" as "thou" and so on.... God Bless. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to everyone that responed to my question about Attala County's Baptist Church's minutes. Respectfully, Doug Cummins Pensacola, FL
Dear Friends, I so much appreciate every comment, suggestion and every bit of help you sent to me in my search for my g-g-grandfather Drury Hodges. This has been an exciting time for me, and the fun is just beginning. I am sending this to the Lists in Attala, Choctaw and Webster because the family I am searching lived Choctaw which later became Webster 1850 until 1880, and in Attala in 1880 until--. I went back to the 1840 Choctaw Census (No TWP Listed) to attempt to search for the father of Drury, and there is a possibility I found him. Actually I found two more Hodges men (as you know the 1840 lists only the heads of families) with the family members listed only by sex and approximate ages. Not much help but it's all we have. This is what I found: Hodges, Turner D. 1 male under 5 1 male 20-30 1 male 40-50 1 female under 5 1 female 20-30 If we accept most of the later censuses which show that Drury was born 1824, then in 1840, he would be about 16 years old, and there is not a male in the household of Turner D. Hodges who is in that age bracket. There is however both a male as well as a female whose ages are 20-30, and I believe that this is Turner D. and his wife, whoever she is. Anyone know? I also believe that the male who is between 40 and 50 in age is the father of either Turner or his wife. Of course, the two children, one male and one female are their children. So it looks like this Turner Hodges could be a brother to "my" Drury. I also found the following: Hodges, James 1 male under 5 1 male 10-15 1 male 15-20 1 male 20-30 1 male 40-50 1 female under 5 1 female 10-15 2 females 15-20 1 female 40-50 This James Hodges could well be the father of both Drury and Turner D. If there is both a male and a female whose ages are 40-50, they could easily be the parents of someone whose ages aare 20-30. Now look at the 1 male whose age was 15-20, and he could well be Drury, my g-g-grandfather, with one younger brother and one older brother, plus four sisters still at home. with Turner D. being the oldest son, and married. I would like to know if anyone out is researching either Turner D. or James Hodges. If so, please write to me and let's compare notes. I would really enjoy hearing from any and all of you. I have enjoyed the many e-mails from you. Mozelle
This reply is to M. Willis and other seeking Baptist Church info for Mississippi and not just Attala County. The Mississippi Baptist Historical Center located on the second floor of the Leland Speed Library in Clinton, Mississippi. That serves Mississippi College, a Baptist institution. The Historical Center is a preserver, not a generator, of records pertaining to Baptist work in Mississippi and contains records of State and County Associations for Mississippi. It also contains records of the Mississippi Baptist newspaper under it's various name through the years. It has other records of MS Baptist work, too. These records have no membership list of individual churches, but there are many names of Mississippi Baptist scattered thought out these records. Some Church donated their past years minutes to the Historical Commission. The Commission through the years has many of those old minutes on microfilm. It's a hit and miss situation to look to the Historical Commission to find info on a particular church. The best place (and first) place to start is with the churches themselves. Some churches, not exclusive to Baptist churches, since their beginning have kept excellent church minutes that includes list of member and their coming and leaving. Other churches have generated and kept little or nothing in the way of prior records. In my case Good Hope Baptist Church, the church of my g-grandfather, located in the northeastern part of Madison County, Mississippi kept good records and has kept minute records since its founding in 1851. In 1951 three of those Minute Books were given to the Historical Commission for save keeping. Years ago I bought a copy of the microfilm of those minute books. In those three Minute Books contain info on the lives on many of my ancestors. Then the church of my grandfather in Sunflower County, Mississippi, Linn Baptist Church, has kept or generated no records of its prior years of existence. Records of my ancestors attending this church are none due to poor attention to keeping records. Some people just don't understand the need of keeping records-legally or historically. Prosperity suffers from such thinking. Poor record keeping is not just a problem in the past. Today I belong to a Baptist Church that has kept no records of its past and has few for today. This church doesn't know who its prior members were. Record keeping is immaterial, or low priority, to many churches. The Mississippi Baptist Historical can't produce records that were never generated in the first place as I said earlier it only preserves records passed on to it. Too, the Commission doesn't keep membership list of Baptist churches in MS. One will only find such membership list in individual churches themselves or possibly in any records donated to the Commission for safe keeping. Yes, too as mention perviously the Commission is only staffed by one individual and can offer only limited help. So as suggested phoning in advance is best for anyone traveling a great distance. Then allow yourself plenty of time. Research in a hurry only generates frustration. The Commission is the Archive of Baptist work in MS, so visit if you can you could strike a gold mine, then you could strike out. Others on this List may have other thoughts on the subject of locating Baptist Church membership list, not necessarily just Baptist churches. Curtis McDaniel
Hi All, All MSATTALA message replies are set to default to MSATTALA. For a message to be sent to the originator requires that the sender override the "To:" section of the E-mail message. This has been known to occasionally misfire, however. There is an ongoing problem with all of the rootsweb.com mail lists. Rootsweb had a server go down earlier in the month and this server was scheduled to be replaced on 7/22/04. However, the server continued to be problematic as of 7/25/04 which is the last report from rootsweb. Rootsweb has issued an alert that assures that no mail will be lost but may be delayed until the problematic server is replaced. This problem could effect some of you some of the time, but not at other times. We are at the mercy of rootsweb.com to resolve the problem. In the meantime, you can periodically check the MSATTALA archives which will list all messages sent. You can find the archives by clicking on the link below: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/MSATTALA or a link is also available on the main page of the Attala County web site, which can be found here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~msattala/index.html I will keep the list posted on rootsweb's efforts to resolve the problem. This is my first post and I don't know what I am doing. I just hit the reply button. I wanted to comment on the MS College Baptist archives post but I couldn't see where to reply to it. When I was last in MS, I went to MS College and I skimmed over some convention minutes but I didn't see anything that might help locate ancestors, just the items discussed at each convention. I went there hoping to find my ancestors in church membership lists. I found brief files on churches in Attala County but not membership lists. Not a whole lot there, but then again I was pressed for time and new to research. Can anyone tell me where I might find lists of members from 1890's-1900's? Or which churches are still in existence? I am guessing Springdale Baptist is likely the church my family attended, or New Salem, West Station, or Mt Vernon Baptist churches. I'm looking for James Willis. BTW, I have the Ray family from Kilmichael, MS's history, going back to Virginia, my grandmother's fam! ily. Thank you. M.Willis __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Sometimes people will only reply to the person they are sending to without sending to the list group. Others try to include the list group address to insure that all receive the message (we try our best but slip some times). There may be other reasons, but this is the most common one I have found in the different list groups I am in and try when noticed, I try to resend the messages I receive back to the group for all to share. Never know who you may find by doing so. Hope this helps. The moderator of this group may have another answer as well. I know there are those researching the Hodges line, a line I have been working on for twenty five years plus. Until recently I could not get any further back than my great grandfather Charles H. Hodges who was born in 1856-7, and there was a reason. Very early in my research I had been told that his father's name was Isora Hodges, (no name given for his wife) and I have spent al these years looking for Isora. HAS ANYONE EVER FOUND ISORA HODGES? I had the names of most of Charles H. Hodges's siblings but was not sure of the order of birth, except for the two youngest. A year or so ago, I found in one of my boxes of notes a half sheet of paper, now yellow with age, on which I had written some info I had gleaned from the 1880 Attala County (Mitchell's Mill) Census, and it read: Hodges, Jenette, age 56, b. 1824 in SC, Father b. SC, Mother b. TN Hodges, Nancy J. age 19, b. 1861, Father b. SC, Mother b. SC Hodges, Thomas G., age 15, b. 1865, Father b. SC, Mother b. SC I had no idea who this Jenette was, but I did know who Nancy and Thomas were. They were two of the siblings of my great grandfather, Charles H. Hodges. I knew also who they later married and the names of many of their ancestors. I figured that if these two children were living in one household with someone named Jenette, she was their mother!! And this was the first time I ever had a hint of the first name of my g-g-grandmother! Though I had had this scrap of paper for several years, I never could find anywhere to put them. Now if her name was Jenette, she must have married the one I had always thought was named "Isora." I had checked EVERYWHERE for him and came up empty every time! So I decided to try another name, but where do I start? I went to the 1870 Choctaw County (Montevista) Census to look for something for someone else on one of the Lists, and the Hodges family literally jumped off the page at me. My Hodges family! There she was with ALL her children in the correct order of birth. (See how it helps to help someone else??) This is what I found: Hodge(s) Jenetta, age 46 b. KY Hodges, John J., age 23, b. MS Hodges, James M(adison), age 20 b. MS Hodges, William D., age 17 b. MS Hodges, Charles H(enry), b. age 14, b. MS Hodges, Nancy J., age 9, b. MS Hodges, Thomas G., age 5, b. MS I knew there was one discrepancy - Jennette's place of birth, but I wasn't through. The remainder of the information I had was a good match, but I wasn't finished yet because I did not have the father's name. I knew that if Thomas G. Hodges was born in 1865, his father - whoever he was - had to be living with the family at least part of 1865. I went to the 1860 Choctaw County (Belfontaine) Census to look for the father of these children. I was really getting excited by now! This is what I found: Hodges, Drury, age 36, farmer, b. SC Hodges, Jennalia, age 37 b. Ky (there is the Ky birthplace again.) Hodges, John J., age 13, b. MS Hodges, James M., age 10, b. MS Hodges, William D., age 8, b. MS Hodges, Charles H., age 4, b. MS Hodges, Ira Z, age 1, b. MS (Note that Ira Z. is not in the 1870 nor 1880 census. He most likely died as an infant, since their methods of health were so poor in those days.) Going back ten more years to the 1850 Choctaw County (Western Division) I found the following: Hodges, Drury, age 25, farmer, b. MS (an error since he was b. SC) Hodges, Jenetty, age 26, b. MS (looks as though the census taker ASSUMED their places of birth) Hodges, John, age 4, b. MS Hodges, James, age 1, b. MS Cairo (no surname) farm laborer So, it looks like the name of my great-great-grandfather was a very well-used name in the Hodges family, that of DRURY, and not Isora, unless of course Isora was his middle name. Since he is shown in the 1850 and the 1860 censuses, and he was around to father his last child in 1865, he must have died around the end of the Civil War. Could he have been in the War and did not survive it? Do any of you know? If any of you are researching this family, or one which connects to it, please write to me and we will compare notes. Thank you so much. Mozelle P. Chason
