3. My mother's oldest sister always listened to the family talk and she handed down to me all she remembered. She stated that two brothers and a sister came to Attala Co and their father was named Jake. About 25 years ago I searched everything and could NOT find any listing for these other Pickles as being Jacob's chidlren. So in my history I state as the first three children Jack (John, my ancestor), Louis or Lewis, and sister Nancy. Nancy married first Jasper Henry Lee, then Mr. Dill, and then Henry Milton Jenkins. I have been researching family history since 1957. When I was researching the Pickle history I read everything in the MOnroe Co courthouse and could not find any evidence that these others were his children, but they probably are. My idea is that Catherine is possibly NOT the mother of all his children. In 1870 she was living between two Pickles and with the JOhnson family - there is always the possibility that this Cassandra or Kizannah was her daughter - but she was not with Jacob and Catherine in the 1850 census. But how will we ever know for sure! Over the years I have picked up several more who could be Jacob's children but no proof! We are fortunate that old Jacob "Jake" was the only old Pickle in this area of the country!!!! I have never found any proof that old Jacob came to Attala County. Only found Catherine here in 1870. I think the census taker missed an area of Monroe Co or Attala Co in 1860 as there were so many Pickles that did not appear in the census of 1860. 1. Re: [MSATTALA] Pickle
2. Janice, Sam, and all others interested I was not aware that Nancy went to Attala County. Which husband did she go with (Lee, Dill, or Jenkins)? Janice, you make a valid point about Jacob and Catherine and the children. The name Catherine is only definitely used by Robert (first child born) and Greenberry (second child, first female). Mary, who stayed in Fayette County, had no Catherine. James, another Fayette County Pickle, had no Catherine (I have only been able to identify three male children). As you pointed out, John "Jack" Pickle had no Catherine. Jacob Lewis had a daughter named Mary C. "Katie" Pickle. Do we know what the C stands for? Nancy's first child with Mr. Dill was also named Mary C. Back in Monroe County, Henry Pickle had a daughter named Eliza C. Pickle. Once again I have no indication of what the C stands for. The name thing intrigued me. I can honestly say it had never crossed my mind. So, I did some more checking. Robert, Henry, Greenberry, and Jacob Lewis all had boys named Jacob. Mary, James, John "Jack" failed to use the name. Nancy only had one boy and his name was Lewis J. (do not know about the J). The question is seldom asked, but how did we formulate the list of the children of Jacob and Catherine? I know that there was a list given in the Mother Monroe book (or it History of Monroe). However, it never gave any corroborating evidence. Is there any hard evidence linking each child to Jacob and Catherine. For example, Robert is named as a child of Jacob and Catherine Pickle in the bible of Jacob "One-eyed Jake" Pickle, son of Robert. Kathy Wilcox, a descendent of Robert has some pretty convincing evidence that a Jacob Pickle married a Catherine Berry (it is posted at my website). While there are many questions we need to answer, I think it is probably the most critical question that we should answer. Janice --BTW - I was going through my file cabinet a few days ago and found a folder of letters that you sent me a few short years ago (or atleaset is seems not so long ago). Is it not amazing that we used to do this all by pen, paper, and postage stamps. Greg Green www.geocities.com/greenweeks

3. About Jacob and Catherine Pickle. We can't assume that Catherine is the mother of these Pickles! I know from my family that John (my ancestor), Louis or Lewis, and sister Nancy (married Lee, Dill, Jenkins) are brothers and sister and were children of Jacob "Jake" Pickle. If you will notice in the names the three of these gave their children that there is NOT one who named a child "Catherine." Look at the others in Monroe County - Robert named his first known child "Catherine." Then when you check the names of the children of Green Berry Pickle that he named his first daughter "Catherine." Also, The Cassandra b. ca 1830 Miss, married to a R. Johnson and is listed in the 1870 Attala Co census where Catherine is living in 1870, could be a daughter of Catherine. We just do not know. And the census taker could have made a mistake and put Catherine with this Johnson family instead of with the Pickle family listed above the Johnsons or the family below them for Nancy Pickle and husband Jenkins. I have tried to find out more about this Cassandra but have not found a marriage license or anything else about her. I have copied the County Line Cemetery at Dossville and did not find many Pickles. I was born at Dossville in 1928 and my grandmother was Ada Pickle. When they dug a grave for my Aunt Sarah they found signs that someone else had been buried there. And we have no idea who was buried there. But I do not believe Catherine is the mother of the three (John, Lewis, Nancy) who came first to Attala Co. cause they did not name a child after her. 2. I assume that you know that Jacob Lewis Pickle and his wife Nancy Doss Pickle are buried in County Line Cemetery, he having died May 8, 1930 and she having died Feb. 12, 1942. Since I don't have the listing for Leake County cemeteries I wonder if maybe his parents were buried in Leake County, or maybe they were buried in unmarked graves? Bernice

3. Sam, I found in the 1870 Attala County, a Catherine Pickle, age 89, widow, b. NC living in the household of M.R. Johnson, age 42, b. GA and his wife Kizannah, age 40, b. MS. Their children were Frances J. age 15, Wm. L. Age 14, Martha age 11, James M. age 10, Martin age 8, John K. age 5, Thomas J. age 2, and Mary V., showing age as 1/6 (I think the census taker meant to write 1/12). If this Catherine was 89 in 1870, her date of birth would have been about 1781. Is this one yours? Also found in the 1870 Attala Census a Lewis Pickle, age 60, a potter and farmer just two doors down from the Johnson family and Catherine Pickle. This Lewis was age 60, b. AL. His wife was Mary, age 43, b. MS, and they had the following children: Lewis J., age 13, James M., age 10 and Kenny t., age 5. (In the 1860 Attala, this Lewis is shown at age 42, a jugmaker, b. AL. His wife, Mary, is shown age 35, b. AL, and the following children: John R., age 14, George W. age 12, Mary C., age 9, Lewis J. age 5 and james M. age 1. All the children b. MS) Hope this helps. 3. My connection to Attala cnty is through my wife's grandfather. His name is Addkison and that family is from up there. They're connected to quite a few other families up there, but I don't have my information in front of me know to be able to say who. Most of the time I lurk on the mailing list and just read, but I enjoy it very much. Once I dig out all my stuff, (I just moved not too long ago,) I'll post all the stuff I'm working on. Happy New Year!
