    3. Holly, I realize that this mail is several months old however I kept it to ask you if you would do a "look-up" for me in your Neshoba County book of early settlers. Could you look for SINGLETON for me or WHITE families. Around 1850 more or less. 3. Everette, we are in the middle of a move so I am unable to get at my research books, but I recall from memory that Andrew Jackson and his troops made camp up in what is now French Camp on their return home via the Trace. The rock well you seek may well be at the site of that camp. I suspect anyone from the French Camp area would know the exact location of that camp where, also, a couple of Jackson's troops are buried. It is supposedly located south of the present site of the Berea Church and Cemetery, but does anyone have definitive information that would allow one to locate the actual well site? Does the well still exist? Everette Carr

    3. LEN, I have found that the deed records of a county often help locate a cemetery. Go to the deed records and see if Mr Gunn ever deeded land for a cemetery. This would give you a location. Also in my experience do not be surprised if this turns out to be a black AND whilte cemetery. Was often the case! I have a death certificate of 1 of my relatives and this is what the name looks like. The undertaker were Matthew and Garland. This cemetery existed in 1930. It should be a black cemetery. ____________________________________________________ Yahoo! Sports Rekindle the Rivalries. 3. Len, I know little of the cemeteries in Attala, but I do know about people who lived on someone's land and sharecropped during those years. It was not uncommon at all for the owner of the land to reserve a small portion of land to bury those who died while in his employ. Do you think that your folks lived on Mr. Gunn's land and the death certificate actually reads "Mr. Gunn's Cemetery"? A few months ago someone was looking for a cemetery in my county and it showed on the death certificate "Johnson Pl." After much research and several telephone calls I found that there was indeed a large plantation called the Johnson Place, and there is a cemetery on that land which is still being used. Unfortunately, there was no marker for the individual they were looking for. I hope this gives you another idea. If you can find them in the 1930 Attala Census, I'd venture a guess that you will also find a Mr. Gunn. All this is speculation, but there might be something to my surmises. 3. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding cleaning out the inscription on a smooth gray (part is rough hewn and part is smooth) marble stone which is about 70 years old? The cemetery/tombstone people told me to use a toothbrush and little Clorox but I have not tried that yet. Need something less damaging. (One can hardly make out the inscription because it is now so near the color of the rest of the monument). Thanks very much. Lucy [email protected] (I know there were many suggestions at one time but because of illness and this and that, I had to delete all the messages, etc. and re-arrange genealogy information in order to download my mail). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marion Webb" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, May 20, 2005 2:19 PM Subject: Re: [MSATTALA] Tombstone Damage > > Brushing the inscribed area with corn starch highlights the lettering also. 1. John Allen b. 1784 - tombstone!!

    3. The tombstone of John Allen b. 1784 died 1867 buried in the Kosciusko city cemetery needs to be lifted up. We went to Laurel Hill to an aunt's 100th year birthday party Sunday and came back by the cemetery. John wanted to check on his parents' stones (Craft) in the Rimmer plot, just NE of the "Lady" stone. I stopped to check on John Allen's stone. It has been lying down for about 20 years. This time I had to scrape the grass off the top to be sure it was his stone. Some of you John Allen descendants need to place it on a slab of concrete before it completely disappears. He married Pegga Stimmons. Their children were: Betsy Allen married Willian Ellington Elvira Allen married Elisha Stamps - stayed in Lawrence Co Mary Ann Allen married Wiliam Simmons Eliza Allen married Mathew T. Harris William Allen married Martha Jane Jeffries Alzada Allen married Hermongene LeBlanc Charity Allen married Stephen Nelson Chennault Riley Allen Elmira Jane Allen married James Perry Aden. You need to do something before it is complete covered up. When you go into the north entrance you will find steps on the south side of the entrance. You take the steps up to the front of the cemetery. The stone is about 30 feet toward the south and is just on the south side of several stones that are standing. In fact, it is on top of the little hill about 20 feet west of the east edge. I pulled some of the grass off the stone Sunday. In the Attala Co cemetery book he is listed next to the Shanks family and Martha Davis Turner on page 118. I did not check Sunday to see the name on the stone next to his stone. I am descended from Jesse Simmons (father of Pegga Simmons) through his son Joseph Simmons.. Janice Craft, Greenville

    3. A letter form Judi Bell, President of the Attala Historical Society has sent out a letter to the 'Friends of the Attala Historical Society', dated June 1, 2005. This letter has been posted to the 'Attala Historical Society' web site, which was created and is maintained by Everette Carr. The society is in need of your financial support. Please read the letter and give consideration to supporting the Attala Historical Society with a generous contribution. The letter can be accessed by going to the Attala Historical Society web site and clicking on 'ENTER'. http://www.rootsweb.com/~msahs/ There is a link at the bottom of the letter that will allow you to print out a form to be used to make a contribution to the society. If you choose to send a contribution to the society, I would appreciate your using the form on the web site as the society apparently does not feel that the Attala Historical Society web site is beneficial to the society and its efforts to promote and preserve the History and Heritage of Attala County. If you believe otherwise, a favorable note to the society, even if you choose not to donate, would go a long way toward convincing the officers and directors of the society that support for the web site is not only beneficial but essential. 3. I use spray shaving cream also sometimes; spray the letters then smooth off the excess except for the cream which remains in the inscriptions. Does no damage to monuments whatsoever.
