To the best of my understanding, there are other Brock families who still live in that area. 1. New Additions to the American Local History Network web site for Attala County
    2. Everette Carr
    3. Several new additions have been added to the American Local History Network web site for Attala County, Mississippi. Links are provided below if you are interested in viewing these new additions. September 28, 2005 - A series of articles have been added dealing with Greenwood Leflore, the French / Indian for whom Greenwood and Leflore county are named. There is information on Greenwood's father, Louis Lefleur and the founding of Lefleur's Bluff where the Capitol of Mississippi now stands. A listing of the family cemetery at 'Malmaison', the plantation home built by James C. Harris for Greenwood Leflore, the 'Last Will and Testament of Greenwood Leflore', the "Treaty of Doake's Stand", the events and discussions just days before the signing of the "Dancing Rabbit Creek Treaty", and the "Dancing Rabbit Creek Treaty". Read about Greenwood Leflore's rise to fame from a youngster who could speak little English to become a wealthy plantation owner and a Mississippi State legislature. Some genealogical information on the Lefleur/Leflore family is included. Click on this link: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ms/county/attala/greenwoodleflore-1.htm Greenwood Leflore October 8, 2005 - Excerpts from the book Tupelo have been added. Tupelo, by John Hill Aughey, is a first person, account, of a man imprisoned and condemned to execution by the officials of the South for his outspoken anti-Secession and pro-Union beliefs. He makes a truly miraculous escape, to report the details of his ordeal in what was to become a highly praised and popular autobiography. The Reverend Aughey served churches in Attala and Choctaw counties at the outbreak of the war between the states. 3. I visited Beauvoir for the first time a few years ago. It was a trip I had wanted to make for quite a few years. I am so glad I got to see the buildings that were destroyed before all this. It is sad to thank about all the buildings, homes, etc on the coast that have stood for years and are wiped out. All of them sadden me, but because of the historical nature of these I am saddened too. My in-laws live near Biloxi and had told me that it was badly damaged but these photos were the first I had seen. 3. Hi Attala County Researchers, Many of you are now aware that 'Beauvoir', the retirement home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis was heavily damaged by hurricane Katrina. The Presidential Library was also damaged, but both can be restored. Many of the other buildings on the site of the museum and library were totally destroyed and replicas will have to be built to restore the complex to its former glory. I have created a number of web pages with links to other web sites to give all with an interest in history and the heritage of the state of Mississippi an opportunity to view the damage. These web pages show, with graphic clarity, the damage that the Jefferson Davis estate sustained and they provide information on how you can help with the restoration project. The Mississippi Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans, the owner of the Jefferson Davis property is already at work with clean up operations, and will spearhead the efforts to restore or replace all of the buildings in the complex. They need your financial assistance if they are to be successful. The thesis was titled "FRENCH CAMP: A HISTORY OF THE ACADEMY". This thesis has been posted to the Attala County MSGenWeb web site in its entirety. Care has been taken to replicate the look and feel of the original thesis, so it appears page by page complete with source notes. To view the thesis, click on the following link; http://www.rootsweb.com/~msattala/frenchcampacademy-cover.html Some of you may think that this has no application to your research in Attala County as French Camp was located in Choctaw county but the Village of French Camp was closer to many small settlements in northeast Attala county than the most of the towns and villages in Attala county. 1. Attala County RootsWeb site Approaching a Milestone
    2. Everette Carr
    3. The Attala County Rootsweb Site is approaching a Milestone. Presently, we are within less than 200 hits of reaching the magic 100,000 visitor mark. The Attala Genealogy web site came into being in September 1996 when Tara Barrett, a researcher with Attala County connections, took on the responsibility of creating a web site for the benefit of those searching for ancestors in Attala County. Tara was the first volunteer County Coordinator for USGenWeb for Attala County, Mississippi. The next USGenWeb County Coordinator with responsibility for Attala County was David Frazier. David, who resides in Texas, was the County Coordinator from 1999 until January, 2001. I assumed responsibility for the Attala County web site in late January, 2001 and continue to serve in the capacity of volunteer County Coordinator for Attala County today. I reside in Pennsylvania, but Attala County is dear to my heart. In late January, 2001 the counter at the bottom of the main page of the Attala County web site read 42,059. Very shortly it will read: 100,000 If it were practical, I would organize a parade around the square in downtown Kosciusko. But that is not possible, so we will have to content ourselves with celebrating quietly in front of our respective computers knowing that technology has expanded greatly and with this new technology and the kindness of total strangers, we can search for our ancestors from the relative comfort of our homes. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and applaud the efforts of Tara Barrett and David Frazier the two individuals that paved the way for all of us that are interested in the history and genealogy of Attala County, Mississippi. Their efforts made it possible for the Attala County MSGenWeb site to grow to what it is today. I have made a contribution, but that contribution is only made possible through the efforts of those researchers that are willing to share the information that they have been able to uncover. Documents, photographs, letters, files, wills, newspapers, land records, family genealogy. Yes all of this and more. So I would be remiss if I failed to acknowledge all of you that have contributed. Thank you, we could not do it without you. Keep your eye on the counter during the next few days and watch it roll over and good luck to all of you with your research.
