Author: masjml Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.mississippi.counties.amite/1217.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am attaching some research documentation about Mary White that I have found: "Kennon Family", William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, vol XIV, No. 4, Apr 1906: John Woodson, born 22 April, 1780. Died August 11, 1822. Married Elizabeth, daughter of John and Mary White [Daughter Elizabeth White married Rev. John Woodson Kennon in Amite Co., MS 16 Feb 1812]. Merrow Egerton Sorley. Lewis Of Warner Hall : The History of a Family Including the Genealogy of .... Baltimore MD: Genealogical Publishing Co. 1935 Chapter: Elizabeth Lewis Kennon and her Descendants, p.411 Rev. Woodson Kennon [b. Granville Co., NC Apr 22 1780 - d. Amite Co., MS Jan 10 1823], moved from GA in early manhood and settled in Amite Co., MS. He married there on Feb 16 1812 Elizabeth White [b. North Carolina Mar 15 1783 - d. Madison Co., MS Mar 16 1838], daughter of John and Mary White of North Carolina. John W. Kennon, along with Mary's two sons David and James, was named as an executor to the will of Mary White. I know that Rev. John W. Kennon was Elizabeth's husband and Mary's son-in-law. This provides additional evidence to support the above two statements. FACT: Elizabeth White b. in North Carolina married Rev. John Woodson Kennon b. in North Carolina 16 Feb 1812 in Amite Co., Mississippi. FACT: Elizabeth White Kennon was named as "one of my children" and an heir in Mary White's will. FACT: John W. Kennon, Elizabeth's husband, was named as an executor in Mary White's will. I believe the above references and facts provide a preponderance of evidence that John and Mary [Barker??] White were the parents of the Amite Co. Whites; namely, David, James, Alfred White and Sarah White, Effy Dear, and Elizabeth Kennon. A Barker family member contacted me a while back and said that "my" Mary White was Mary Barker, daughter of John Barker and his wife Elizabeth Gilliam. "Daughter" Mary White was mentioned in John's will. Another NC connection, this bunch from Iredell, NC. So far I can neither prove or disprove. Now to our possible connection: 1] Above reference does state that John and Mary White were the parents of Elizabeth White b.15 Mar 1783. Elizabeth married Rev. John Woodson Kennon in 1812 in Amite Co., MS. [Elizabeth White Kennon is the correct name...my bad!] 2] I have a copy of Mary's will. The witnesses were:Davis Windborne and Jesse McKay. 3] Elizabeth's dob came from one of the above sources so I'm not absolutely certain of the accuracy. 4] I believe that some of Mary's son Alfred's children were born in SC since censuses state it. It seems they all stopped over in SC, Alfred apparently longer than the others before following the rest of his family to Amite Co., MS. An 1850 census of one of Alfred's children states that his father was born in NC. 4] Since Mary was moving with her children alone, I have wondered if she was a widow. If this Mary is "my" Mary, was she traveling with brothers of John White? 5] Children named in her will were James, David, Alfred, and daughters Elizabeth Kennon, Effy Dear, and Sarah "Sally" White. 6] Could there be any more common names than John and Mary? I would love to determine where in NC this branch of the White family came from, so let's keep searching for any evidence of the White-Tarver connection.
