Author: ggLongmire Surnames: Butler Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.mississippi.counties.amite/1211.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Good morning, Ray. Seems like you are still trying to locate the burial of DECATUR NOONAN BUTLER (1858-1894). The most concise list of known Amite County MS burials is the publication by Uvvon Serena Abbess Haymon, AMITE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI CEMETERIES (Greenwell Springs, Louisiana: Uvvon Serena Abbess Haymon, 1993), which was a reprint of that by J. Paul Mogan, Jr. and Kathryn Cole Mogan with Glen Huff, entitled AMITE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI CEMETERIES (Osyka, Mississippi: Paul & Kathryn Mogan, 1982). I have a copy, and found no burial of Decatur therein when we corresponded by email early this month. As I posited in my email message to you at 5:43 pm on 5 July 2012: "The lack of a burial tombstone could indicate a couple of things: 1) that the family was somewhat indigent (no disrespect intended), and buried him without much more than a rock on top; or 2) he died at sea/river and body was lost; or 3) he lost his life in the (later) Spanish-American War, records for which ! would be readibly available." Otherwise, an approach that I mentioned to you before would be to locate a mention in an surviving church record (Casey Vol. 2 would be a start). Finally, you might examine the newspapers of about his death date (30 March 1894) to see if there be a mention of his burial. Would recommend that you go to Jackson MS and visit the MDAH for access to its microfilms thereof. (I also have all the films, and could scroll through them at some time for you, an onerous task!) What would you recommend as how to find where he might be buried? If we go the Liberty, Mississippi and the death certificate is not recorded in that town how would someone go about finding that out? As well, if we think he died in Liberty, where would the best place be to do this research in Amite county? Thanks, RR Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
