Kennon, Elizabeth's husband, was named as an executor in Mary White's will. I believe the above references and facts provide a preponderance of evidence that John and Mary [Barker??] White were the parents of the Amite Co. Whites; namely, David, James, Alfred White and Sarah White, Effy Dear, and Elizabeth Kennon. A Barker family member contacted me a while back and said that "my" Mary White was Mary Barker, daughter of John Barker and his wife Elizabeth Gilliam. "Daughter" Mary White was mentioned in John's will. Another NC connection, this bunch from Iredell, NC. So far I can neither prove or disprove. Now to our possible connection: 1] Above reference does state that John and Mary White were the parents of Elizabeth White b.15 Mar 1783. Elizabeth married Rev. John Woodson Kennon in 1812 in Amite Co., MS. [Elizabeth White Kennon is the correct name...my bad!] 2] I have a copy of Mary's will. The witnesses were:Davis Windborne and Jesse McKay. 3] Elizabeth's dob came from one of the above sources so I'm not absolutely certain of the accuracy. 4] I believe that some of Mary's son Alfred's children were born in SC since censuses state it. It seems they all stopped over in SC, Alfred apparently longer than the others before following the rest of his family to Amite Co., MS. An 1850 census of one of Alfred's children states that his father was born in NC. 4] Since Mary was moving with her children alone, I have wondered if she was a widow. If this Mary is "my" Mary, was she traveling with brothers of John White? 5] Children named in her will were James, David, Alfred, and daughters Elizabeth Kennon, Effy Dear, and Sarah "Sally" White. 6] Could there be any more common names than John and Mary? I would love to determine where in NC this branch of the White family came from, so let's keep searching for any evidence of the White-Tarver connection. Setting out again a few facts from Northampton county, NC and Barnwell county, SC: 1) James Tarver will probated 1777 was witnessed by Joshua White and Mary White. 2) a Mary White mentioned in the will of Billison Seat as his daughter. Billison Seat's will probated in 1786 in NHT county, NC 3)The following White's are shown on the 1790 Northampton county, NC county census: John White 3M 16 and up 1F 9 slaves Joshua White 1M 16 and up 1M to 16 1F Davis White 1M 16 and up 2 F 4 slaves I only have the 1800 NHT county census for the Tarvers...It would be helpful if it can be determined if any White's are shown on the 1800 or 1810 Northampton County(NHT) censuses 4)The following White's are shown on the 1800 Barnwell county, SC census: Pg. 47A James White 3M 1790 to 1800 1M 1755 to 1774 2F 1755 to 1774 William White (right next to James White H/H) 1M 1774 to 1784 1F 1790 to 1800 1F 1774 to 1784 pg. 50A Mary White 3M 1774 to 1784 4F 1784 to 1790 1F 1755 or before 4 slaves ??? Low and Thomas Low on same page I believe this Mary White is the same Mary White who settled in Amite county, MS in about 1810 to 1814. The White's Campground on the east prong of the Amite river was established in 1814. White, Tarver, Lowe, Felder, Adams, and Campbell were all early Methodist families in this area as per early records for Southwest Amite county, Ms. The Adams families are said to have belonged to similar type campgrounds existing in southwest Barnwell county, SC as was eventually established by the White family in Amite county, MS in 1814 It is not clear what happened to John White--It may be coincidence, but John White is shown on the Northampton county, NC census for 1790 and not shown on the Barnwell county, SC census for 1800 where Mary White and James White and William White are residing at that time. He may have died sometime between 1790 and 1800 or so. This may serve to connect the John and Mary back to NHT, particularly, if it can be determined that John White was not in NHT as per the 1800/1810 NHT county censuses. Or it may be that the John White on the 1790 NHT county, NC census is not the husband of Mary White shown on the 1800 Barnwell county, SC census. It is difficult to make the 1790 NHT county, NC comparison of the H/H of John White to the 1800 Barnwell county, SC H/H of Mary White. There are more individuals in the 1800 H/H of Mary White than shown in the H/H of John White in NHT county, NC based upon various ages represented in both censuses. Not sure about this comparison. A couple of other citations which seems to support a connection of the White's to the Tarvers: a)Thomas Tarver b. abt. 1805, was a son of Benjamin Tarver. Benjamin Tarver, I feel migrated out of Barnwell county, SC (he is shown on the 1800 Barnwell county,SC census)This Thomas Tarver married Rebecca White, the widow of William White Dec. 1827. William White's will was offered for probate and Rebecca White was guardian of the minor children: William White, John White, Mary White and Eliza Ann White. Rebecca was born about 1806 in Ms. b) 1820 Amite county, Ms. census --Whites and Tarvers very near each other as follows: not right next to one another, but all on pg. 32 except as noted Jenkins Tarver John Adams John Obier James White 1M 45 and over, 1 M 16 to 26, no females Burketh Thompson Joseph Adams Alford White (Alfred)2M 0-10, 4M 16-26, 1M 26-45, 1M over 45, 3F 0-10, 1F 16-26, 1F over 45 Henry Flowers Allen Tarver John Campbell Benjamin Tarver(page--34) The connection of these Whites back to Old James Tarver in NHT county, NC is somewhat difficult to make with absolute certainty. However, based upon the above citations and those stated previously, it appears there must be some connection. You mention Elizabeth White Kennon and then Elizabeth White Woodson as the daughter of John and Mary White of NC. Is the Woodson the first husband of this Elizabeth? One snag to the connection to John White in Northampton county, NC is that this Elizabeth b. est. 1783 is not reflected in the household of John White as shown by the 1790 NHT county, NC census which only shows 1 female and this is presumed to be his wife. Also, are there any clues in the will of Mary White such as witnesses or any other names which may provide some clues to a connection back into NHT county, NC families? It is understood that the connection of Mary White to John White shown on the NHT county, NC 1790 census is at best circumstantial at this point. However, maybe it can be strengthened or eliminated based upon ensuing discussion. Thanks for your reply. Cordially, David A. I have a copy of Mary White's will which lists her daughter Elizabeth White Kennon as an heir and her son-in-law John Woodson Kennon [Methodist minister] as an executor. I know that she came to Amite Co., MS with several children, probably David and James who were listed in the 1810 Census; I know that her son and my ancestor Alfred had children born in SC[Barnwell Co.?], then he followed the family to MS by 1816; I know that there was a Methodist Church connection and meetings were held at White's Camp Ground, home of "Mother" Mary White on or near the Amite River; I know that Mary White's will was written in 1817 and probated 6 Sep 1819. I have a source that says Elizabeth White Woodson was the daughter of John & Mary White of NC [Northhampton Co.?]. Maybe we can share & exchange info and possibly find a link between the White and Tarver families. The Mary White connection to NC may be that occurring in Northampton county, NC in about 1780 to 1790 as on the 1790 Northampton county, NC census there were found, Davis White, John White, and Joshua White. I believe, maybe John White could be the husband of Mary White. It seems these Whites moved from Northampton county, NC to Barnwell county, SC then into southern Mississippi to Amite county. Further, a Mary White is mentioned in the will of Billison Seat which was probated in 1786 in Northampton county, NC. Another daughter of Billison Seat, Lucy Seat, married James Tarver mentioned herein. I am trying to connect these Whites to James Tarver who resided in Northampton county, NC and filed a will there in 1775. His will was witnessed by Joshua White and Mary White. If I can connect these Whites to James Tarver and his son, Thomas Tarver, who may be the Thomas Tarver residing in Barnwell county, SC and is on the 1800 Barwell county, Sc census; it may lead to verification that this Thomas Tarver was in fact the Thomas Tarver who left Northampton county, NC at a time near that of the Whites and migrated to Barnwell county, Sc arriving there sometime around 1784. There are several Whites in Barnwell county, SC about 1800 or so who eventually migrated on down into Amite county, MS arriving there in the early 1800's. The Tarvers and Whites were families mentioned in Amite county, Ms. records who located on the Amite river and who were involved in the Methodist ministry and were friendly to persons in that area as early as about 1814 in Amite county, Ms. I am not sure of the age of Mary White at the date of her death in Amite county in about 1817. James Tarver was born about 1720 or so and his son Thomas Tarver born about 1750 or so. Another son of James Tarver, namely, James Tarver, Jr. had a son, James Tarver III who moved into Lawrence county, MS arriving there sometime around 1810-1815. I am not sure if John White shown on the 1790 Northampton county, NC census was a Methodist minister or not, but the Whites were in some way connected to the ministry. And if Mary White who was in Amite county and died there about 1817 was involved in the minstry, there may be a connection back to Northampton county, NC. Any assistance/discussion in tying Mary White who died in Amite county, MS about 1817 and/or her family members to Northampton county, NC and to James Tarver and his son Thomas Tarver would be greatly appreciated. I would appreciate a copy of any early Mississippi maps--especially Amite, Adams and Wilkinson Counties. My email address should show in the Rootsweb address. Another question. Does anyone know of or have copies of early maps of Southwest Mississippi that show the roads or trails? Parker, d. 22 Jul 1913, he was b. 19 Jan 1891, probably in Amite. He might have died in either Amite or Hinds county. He was s/o Thomas Short Parker and Cecelia Steven "Stevie" Hamilton. Specifically, I'm looking for any mention of a wife or daughter. His parents and at least two siblings are buried at Hebron cemetery in East Fork, I believe he is also buried there. --- Angela M.
