Name: Manz Gill Spouse: William Allen Marriage Date: 25 Jul 1824 County: Amite I am thinking "Manz" is a possible mistranscription of Mary or Nancy. Since the marriage was in Amite County, it seems likely she was the daughter of John Gill Jr b ~1795 who is shown there in the 1830 census. The 1820 census shows two Gill families in southern Mississippi. James Gill in Marion County, MS has two males 16-25; John Gill in Lawrence County, MS has one male 16-18. If you have any information or even any thoughts on this, I would appreciate hearing from you. I would also love to know which William Allen this is. 1. Re: [MSAMITE] Mary White filing will in 1817 in Amite county, Ms connection to NC
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: datokok Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.mississippi.counties.amite/1217.1.1.2.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: MAF, Thanks again for your reply. Of course, the information regading the will of John White in Iredell county, NC is public information and contained on various postings made on the internet. I beleive it was even a part of information about the Barker families. On to the Whites in Amite county, MS. Based strictly on research on the internet from various sources which seem to support one another the following emerges regarding the family of Mary White who left her will in Amnite county, MS in 1817. You may have all this, but I wanted to present it here in an attempt to flush out any clues about these Whites. 1) Elizabeth White married John Woodson Kennon, a son of John Kennon and Elizabeth Kennon. John W. Kennon appears to have been born in Granville county, NC April 22, 1780. John died in Amite county, Ms. August 11, 1822. He was a Methodist minister sent to Mississippi as a missionary. Elizabeth White, his widow and their children went to Texas sometime before about 1860 or so. He must have married Elizabeth White in Amite county, Ms. 2) Effie White Deer(Dear)--she was born Dec. 10, 1781 married John J. Dear who was b. 1785 in SC and died in Madison county, MS. She married about 1815 and she died in Madison county, Ms. Sep. 22, 1852. John J. Dear had a brother, Hardy Dear who was a probate judge and witnessed the will of Charles Beck 1823 in Barnwell county, SC. Charles Beck had a daughter Elizabeth who most likely married John Tarver, who was ordained as a Methodist minister in Barnwell counnty, SC in about 1801. John Tarver obtained a land grant in Amite county, ms. in 1807 and was sent to the Claiborne county, Ms. circuit where he initially went in about 1806 before settling in Amite county as per the 1810 Amite county, Ms. census. The Dear family was in Barnwell county, SC in the same time period that Mary White was there. On the 1850 Madison county, Ms. census John Dear, Sr. and Effy Dear are shown. he 65 and she 68. This would place her birth in 1782 which corresponds with the above birth date for her. Her place of birth is reflected only as NC. 3)John Woodson Kennon had a sister, Elizabeth Lewis Kennon, b. May 12, 1783, who married David Lindsay White. He was born 1781 and died 1862. He was a minister. Apparently, Elizabeth died early 1-1-1824. The had children, Pleasant White b. abt. 1820 and David Lindsay White. There are a few citations mentioning Rev. David L. White in Putnam county, Ga in 1817 to 1820 time frame. It would appear that Mary White as shown on the Barnwell county, Sc 1800 census would have the family as conjectured by me herein: 3M 1774 to 1784--Alfred, David, and James all born about 1774-1775, it seems. 4F 1784 to 1790--This may be Elizabeth, Effy, Mary and one other female unknown at this time. Granville county, NC tax lists of 1755 shows a John White and there is a Jonathan White who filed a will there as well. It may be that John White who married Mary was in Granville county, NC for a while. More research is needed in that county. It is somewhat curious that both John Woodson Kennon and his sister, Elizabeth married Whites. As noted above John W. Kennon married Elizabeth White and his sister, Elizabeth Lewis Kennon married Rev. David L. White. Not sure how Mary White is connected to David White, but there must be a family connection. I am unable to link the John White, shown on the Northampton county, NC census in 1790 to Mary White who is shown on the Barnwell county, SC 1800 census with any certainty. The NHT Whites may be connected to the Amite county, Ms. Mary White, but at this point I cannot positively confirm the connection. I do know as stated earlier that a Joshua White and Mary White witnessed the will of James Tarver in NHT county, NC in 1777. This Mary White was in NHT county in 1777 for sure. And a John White and Joshua White are both shown on the 1790 NHT census. I wanted to make these observations in an attempt to clarify/understand the connection of the Whites in Barnwell county, SC and later in Amite county, Ms. to the Tarver families in Barnwell county, SC and later in Amite county, Ms. in the time frame 1785 to 1820 or so and possibly back into Northampton county, NC in the period 1750 to 1800. Author: datokok Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.mississippi.counties.amite/1217.1.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: MAF, Thanks again for the continuing discussion. As you know, there are many, many Whites...particularly the combination of husband John and wife, Mary. Now on to the Barker connection. It is somewhat intriguing and I have studied it again in the past few days. Mary Barker, a daughter of John Barker and Elizabeth Barker as revealed in some of the Barker information was b. abt. 1752 and died in 1819, but as I understand it, John White also died about the same time in Iredell county, NC. Did this Mary die in Iredell county or Amite county? John Barker and Joel Barker were brothers and sons of an older Joel Barker. Joel Barker, Jr. settled in Northampton county, NC for a while showing up in various land transactions there from 1745 to 1756 or so and maybe later. He eventually went on down to Wake county, NC and left his will there in 1778. John Barker resided in Brunswick county, Va. Joel Barker resided on land in Northampton county, NC which joined OLD James Tarver who died there in NHT in 1777. James Tarver's will was witnessed by a Mary White and Joshua White in 1777. John White is still shown in NHT county, NC as late as the 1790 NHT county, NC census. I had hoped I could verify in fact there was a Barker connection which would sort of solidify the Tarver/White connection back in Northampton county, NC/Brunswick county, Va as Joel Barker resided on land joining James Tarver and his brother, John Barker had the daughter, Mary who married a John White. The Barker information needs to be studied furhter to make sure where the Mary White died in 1819. If in Iredell county, NC, whe would not be the Mary White moving on into Amite county, MS. As I can find there are 3 or 4 John White's shown on a 1790 NC census: Gates county, Pasquotank, Northampton, and possibly Periquimans counties. James White and William White shown on 1800 Barnwell county, SC census may have been brothers of John White as the ages seem to line up somewhat. There was a Thomas White in Northampton county, NC for a few years in the late 1700's and he is there as late as about 1782. He may be connected to the John White shown on the 1790 NHT county, NC census. I cannot yet see where John White either passed away or moved on without Mary White. Do you have information which will show Mary White's birth year or an estimate. Is it around 1750 or so as the Barker information reveals? I agree and will keep studying and analyzing the available information. Also: The Winborne family is another family linked to the Methodist movement in Amite county, MS. And there are several Winbornes in NHT county, NC in the 1790-1800 time frame. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks. Cordially, David A.
