Author: cvfullermd Surnames: McMorris Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.mississippi.counties.amite/1233/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for information on black McMorris families in Amite and Pike Counties. I am the great-great granddaughter of a Hannah McMorris who left Amite or Pike County for New Orleans around 1886. Hannah's mother's name was Mariah-- possibly also spelled Moriah or Maria. I am not certain if Hannah got her surname from her mother or her father-- also likely born a slave. Likewise, I am interested in any family papers from Alexander McMorris Jr. of Bogue Chitto or any related family papers that may contain bills of sale or inheritance, tax records or other records that may state the names and origins of his slaves. Author: blandcat Surnames: Rayborn (various spellings), Watts, Wiggins, Denmark, Rester, Hatten, and Mingersdorff to name a few Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.mississippi.counties.amite/1230/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Through the years, researchers have expressed a desire to purchase a copy of Vada Phillips' book on the Rayborn family (and other spelling variations). When "Mark Rayborn and Rhoda Watts Rayborn: Their Antecedents and Descendants" was originally published, a limited number of copies were printed. Many of those copies were added to genealogy library collections but alas most of them have 'disappeared' through the years. A 414 page 'digital reprint' is now availabe in a format that is fully searchable. Original photographs have been located and enhanced and an additional family reunion photograph was added, along with a list of attendees. Included in the book are a history of the origin of the Rayborn name; Joseph, who died in 1793 in Edgefield County, SC, and his Mississippi children; Mark and Rhoda Watts Rayborn of Covington County, MS; and sections on the Watts, Wiggins, Denmark, Rester, Hatten, and Mingersdorff families. Many parts of the book are in semi-narrative, biographical form and are spiced wherever possible with family anecedotes and not-so-tall tales.
