The name, Dayton, was applied in 1800 in honor of its first merchant, David Day. He also served as postmaster when the post office was established in 1840. In 1917, the Foster Creek Lumber Company decided on this location to establish a large lumber mill, and a small town was immediately built around the mill. I thought about this a little more. I believe the community was called Dayton instead of Deaton.
