Can anyone help this lady? Please direct any reply to the address below as she is probably not subscribed to the mail list. ============================================================================== Carol Norman <[email protected]> I have a 1915 Amite County death certificate where the name of the voter precinct looks like "Ghickwood(s)." But the handwriting is hard to read, and not being familiar with Mississippi at all, I can't figure out where the town of death was. The word definitely ends in "...wood" or "...woods." >From Hometown Mississippi by James Brieger is the following" Crosby Located eight miles northwest of Gloster, the town of Crosby was first known as Dayton, then Stephenson, and later, Crosby. The name, Dayton, was applied in 1800 in honor of its first merchant, David Day. He also served as postmaster when the post office was established in 1840. In 1917, the Foster Creek Lumber Company decided on this location to establish a large lumber mill, and a small town was immediately built around the mill. This town was then name Stephenson, in honor of Fred Stephenson of Michigan who owned the lumber company. In 1934, L. O. Crosby of Picayune purchased the mill and the town became known as Crosby. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Virginia Ewing Sent: Saturday, August 06, 2011 3:46 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MSAMITE] Fwd: Where in Amite County? I thought about this a little more. I believe the community was called Dayton instead of Deaton. Possibly someone else will read this and know the correct spelling and if these are the same site. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Mary Judice Sent: Tuesday, August 02, 2011 4:05 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MSAMITE] Fwd: Where in Amite County?
