Can anyone tell me if there would be a record of a common-law marriage in this County and, if so, where would one search for such record. Flavia Hodges San Pablo, CA

It really clears some things up.Hester Ann Brown being the 2nd wife of Elias accounts for the differences in the childrens ages. A Southern girl and a Yankee there must be more to that story. I am not related to either family I am just helping my wifes step sister do some research. She is the g-grand daughter of Hettie B Safford, d/of Hester Ann Brown and Elias Safford. Hettie married Thomas Cook Curtis. The Curtis's and the Safford's are interred in the White Lawn Cemetery in Point Pleasant, Ocean County, NJ. We can expand a little on this if you are interested. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: lpar000 Surnames: Safford, Brown, Shaw, Hall, Fellows, Reid, Martin, Baker Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.mississippi.counties.amite/1193.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.safford/27.37.41.45.49.51.1.1.1/mb.ashx I've just received some information from a cousin regarding my lineage for Safford family. The document is a copy and probably written in the 1920's or 1930's by Rev. Elisha Safford. He was researching his family tree and apparently helping Jessie Springer in IL. put together chapter for the Springer family (currently in the FHL). In it he stated that John Safford came from England to America in 1670,married Abigail Martin and had one son, John Safford Jr. John Safford Jr. married Lydia Reed and they had Elisha Safford. Elisha Safford married Sylvinia Hall whose brother John Hall was killed in the battle of Berrington 1777. Seven children resulted from this union. Elisha Safford was born near New Lisbon, Windham Co. Ct. March 27, 1748 and died of consumption Sept. 18, 1788 in Windsor, MA. Interred there. The names of the children were Elias born 4/30/1776 in Windsor and married Rebecca Shaw; Roxanna born 6/8/1777 in Windsor married Alvin Haskins; Daniel born 12/2/1778 in Win! dsor married Agnes Meachum; Elisha born 12/18/1780 in Windsor married Olivia Tracy; Sylverina (unsure of spelling) born 12/22/1782 and married Abel Caulkins; Jonas born March 14, 1785 married Martha Sage; Darius born 1/11/1788 married Betsey Harding and Elisa Evarts. I am descended from Elias who married Rebecca Shaw and had the following children: Ermina born 4/24/1801 in Worthington, MA and apparently never married; Christina Sophia born 2/8/1803 in Worthington, MA and married William Furnsman on 9/3/1821; Henry L. born 11/26/1804 in Worthington, MA married Adaline Clark on 2/10/1838 Charles L. born 12/20/1806 in Worthington, MA and married Mary Harwood 1/5/1837; Laurinda born 12/24/1808 in Worthington, MA married George R. Benedict on 9/17/1827; Lydia born 12/28/1810 in Albany, NY; Elias Jr. born 4/4/1812 in Albany, NY and married Angelina Keeler and then Hester Ann Brown; Elisha born 5/20/1814 in Albany, NY (unmarried); Clarissa born 10/4/1816 in Albany, NY and married ! Allen Deming on 1/6/1833; Emily born 11/8/1818 in Albany, NY married C harles A. Lowber 1/6/1841; and Rebecca Shaw born 6/6/1822 in Batavia, NY married James North on 1/6/1847. I have been able to track some of Elias Sr.'s children. Elias Jr. was the father of Edwin Safford of Nokomis, IL. and Edwin was my great grandfather. Edwin married Rebecca Culbertson and they had seven children, Rebecca Jane (Jennie); Edwin N.; Myrtle; Florence; Horace; Rev. Elisha; and John Ray Safford. If anyone else is researching any of this line of Saffords, I have some more information I would be more than happy to share what I have and would greatly appreciate any more information regarding this line. Is your gedcom posted anywhere online? Can you tell me more about the family? My husband descends through Lewis/Louis F. Williams who moved to GA? and then Talladega County, AL. He was there during the Civil War and was an instructor for the Camp of Instruction for new recruits. He was married to Letiticia (unknown). I think Nehemiah was born in NC. Does that sound right. Also when he first moved to MS, I think it would have been Mississippi Territory, became a state about 1819 more or less and I think they were there about 1809. Do you know Susannah's maiden name? Their son, Lewis T. Williams, born abt 1838 in GA, died young (between 1870-1880)likely in AL. He was a butcher and a sheriff. Lewis T.'s widow Susan F. (unknown) Williams moved to Cleburne Co., AL where she died between 1880 and 1900. One of the things that's confused me is info online that says Louis F. Williams was born in or from SC, went to GA, went to AL. I stumbled across the connection to Pikc Co., MS by accident and then began to fill in some of the blank spots. My husband is a direct descendant of Nehemiah and Susannah Williams. Anything else you can add would be helpful. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Can anyone help this man? Please direct any replies directly to the address below: Clydell Morgan, PhD <[email protected]> John -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Memorial Baptist Church, Amite Co. Date: Sat, 13 Aug 2011 18:16:25 +0000 (UTC) From: [email protected] To: [email protected] ========================================================================= Mr. Cain: I am a descendant (Great Grandfather) of Alfred Perkins (1844-1915) who came to Amite and Wilkinson counties after the Civil War. Family legend always had it that he did in fact fight in the war, and it was assumed it was for the South. Alfred settled down, married Annie Jane North, had two sons and quietly died in Centreville in 1915. Since that time, I have found the Perkins line and found that GGF Perkins fought for the Connecticut Union Army and was born in New Brunswick, Canada. This has all been verified by substantiated documentation of pension papers and census records of 1851. GGF Perkins death certificate relates that he was buried at Memorial Church, Amite County. An application for recuperation of veterans benefits completed by Samuel North Perkins in 1916, further verify that GGF Perkins was buried at Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery, "down Capel Road, Amite County". I have personally walked the cemetery and could not find a marker. I am applying for a proper Civil War headstone for him and I need to find who is responsible for the cemetery. I have been in contact with Mr. Taylor, Amite County Chancery Clerk, who reveals that the property is on the tax rolls as Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Taylor and I both agree that someone is maintaining the grass for the overall cemetery (however, the grave markers, which are protected by trees and some wrought iron fencing needs attention). May I ask for your assistance in finding this person as I need to have a signature of someone who takes care of the property? Once I get this signature, file for the headstone and receive the stone, our Perkins Family would like to have an old fashioned dinner on the ground with pomp and ceremony when the stone is laid. Please let me know if you can help. Thank you! Clydell Morgan, PhD [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>

But the handwriting is hard to read, and not being familiar with Mississippi at all, I can't figure out where the town of death was. The word definitely ends in "...wood" or "...woods."
