Cohen is famous for the following reasons: 1)he was the post-Reconstruction black political boss of Louisiana, who survived into the late 1920s (In certain census reports, Captain Cohen identified as white; other times as colored); several Presidents appointed and reappointed him to U. S. positions; and 2) Cohen and his brothers are critical to the formation of black baseball in New Orleans. W. L. Cohen played and managed the Pickwick Base Ball Club (1876-1883); Cohen Base Ball Club (1885-1886); and P.B.S. Pinchbacks (1887-1890. He was the protege of P.B.S. pinchback, the first black governor of Louisiana. I've written a base ball article on him, if you wish to have it. An email address woould be needed.
