It's only 5 years but if they are available it gets you past that 1870 Census barrier. Also, there may be birth records for slaves before 1865. I found slave births included in the regular birth records in Mason Co., KY back into the 1840s and 1850s. Forgot that this meant money to the slave owner so they were recorded.
