She was born Oct. 25, 1912, in Hernando, Mississippi (DeSoto County). to Charles and Omie Childers Howell, the fifth child of eight children. She moved to Youngstown, Ohio with her family after the death of her mother in the early 1920s and attended Campbell Memorial High School. She was on the high school girls' basketball team and baseball team. She worked as staff assistance at the Bethel House, a neighborhood center in Campbell, Ohio and taught youth sewing classes. She worked various other jobs, including assembling airplane parts during World War II. She joined the Gospel Temple Baptist Church at the age of 19 and held the oldest church membership. She remained an active member of the chorus and mission until her health would no longer allow her to participate. She was a former member of the NAACP, Youngstown Area Urban League, Harambee, and the Youngstown Black Independent Political Party. She enjoyed reading, traveling, and fellowship with her friends and family. Earlene leaves behind three daughters, Claudette Lee (G. Winston) of Omaha, Nebraska, Annette Stonework of White Plains, Md. and Mercedes King of Youngstown, Ohio; five grandchildren, Lisa Parker of Garner, N.C., Kenneth King of Youngstown, Mari Lee of Laurel, Md., Erika Lee of Omaha and Gerald Lee II of Hercules, California; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Omie Howell; her husband, Albert Stonework; a daughter, Mildred Ann; brothers, Franklin, Ervin and Charles "Jip" Howell; and sisters, Mary "Sis" Brown, Lular Williams, Geneva Moncrief and Lucille Dothard. Friends may view her from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, March 25, 2011, at the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home and from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church.
