Williams. He is part black and part Indian. Family legend states that he married a white woman by the name of Harriet Acree. He had four sons. S.W. , Matthew, Elsie, and Obadiah. He came from Virginia. Unfortnately I have no clue where. He served in the Army during the civil war. The photo I have I can't tell which side. The court records here in Desoto COunty MS has him listed as white, black , indian, and mulatto. He served as pastor at Beale Street baptist church in Memphis, TN. Any information on where to look will be great.
For the Civil War soldier records, try searching at this site: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ Just doing a quick search, I found 28 men named Jeff Williams in the Union infantry and 17 in the Confedreate. You can narrow the search by state and type of unit he served in, if you know. I'd also check with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to see if he or his wife claimed a Confederate pension. Also, check the 1890 Mississippi Index of Civil War Veterans and Their Widows. There are a number of Civil War research guides available that will help you track down most sources. Start with your library or check Amazon.com. If you want to send me a scan of the photo (keep the resolution low, no larger than 150 dpi but preferably 70 to 100 dpi), I will see if I can ID the uniform.
