Author: kdberr1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.ethnic.afam.ms/1478.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm researching the lynching of my great-great grandfather, CHARLES BROWN, in Wilkinson Co. in Sept. 1879. He had a confrontation with WILBERT and MARY PHARES of Mount Pleasant over non-payment for carpentry work he'd done for the family. During the confrontation, a "nameless outrage" supposedly "almost" occurred (I believe this is a euphemism for rape) and Charles Brown allegedly threatened Mary Phares with a hatchet. LOUIS SWIFT, a black employee of the Phares, helped Wilbert Phares to subdue Brown and put him in the basement of the house. Neighbors heard about the confrontation, came to the house and took him away. He was found hanged 3 days later. I don't know if Charles Brown was actually from Wilkinson Co. -- he lived in East Feliciana Parish, LA. The U.S. Mortality Census for 1880 in East Felciana says he was from Mississippi and had lived in LA for 14 years. I have a newspaper article and have researched Phares, Swift and of course my ancestor in the U.S. Census. I'm hoping this isn't the limit of the information about what happened. The newspaper article was originally published in the Woodville Republican of Wilkinson Co. It was reprinted in East Feliciana Parish and a paper in Cincinnati. If you have info about this lynching, please contact me. Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. Hello List, I agree with the fact that there is not much on line for Wilkinson Co., MS. I too have done research in this area; Fort Adams to be exact. I would be interested in exchanging information with anyone out there about the CAGE family who came from the MOUNT RICO Plantation. 2. Not only is there little info on line, it is hard to hire someone to research something for you. My understanding is that the courthouse is very small and the county is very sparsely populated. Research Corey, Cory and Young In a message dated 6/5/2011 11:01:56 P.M. Thankyou for your valuble info. But I must explain My maternal grandmothers family came off a plantation call "The Thatcher Farm" That was the slave families name..I thought that might ring a bell in the history of that slave owner. The name Jordan or Jerden was a white man that my great, great, grandmother took up with or married I'm not sure. But she took his name. Some of her chilchren she named Lewis and my great grandmothers last name was Kinard which no one knows why she then later married a Trussell and bore my maternal grandmother. so some of the names are from White decendants. As of yet, I don't know why this was done. However if you are looking for Reddick and Jane Thompson with the children Rich and Zana Thompson in the 1870 census, they are listed as Reddick and Jane Hathorn. They are still living a few houses down from Randall and Elizabeth (Betty) Hathorn. I would be interested to know the relationship between this family and Ike and Mahala Hathorn.
