Texas does not allow visitors to "view" vital records. If Mississippi has an open-records policy, I'd be very concerned about identity theft. No its not, the courts I've visited allow it. If I were responsible for the records and budget I'd be glad to save the money of not having to buy extra supplies like toner, paper and not having to use extra electricity to reproduce these documents for a researcher. You know some courts do allow people to do this. Find a way to beat the system?? No, how about finding a way to do my field resarch in an efficient manner that is more cost effective for myself and to the county. Its not nice to hate on someone for giving valid advice that YOU didn't think of. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have figured out a free way to get copies of records I'm interested in, I bring my digital camera and take photos of what I'm looking for. Using the highest settings on my camera allows me to zoom in for closer examination of documents later on my laptop. This is what I plan on doing this year. First let me say, having experienced this same type of incident in my own family research, condolences. I don't know anything about this particular incident. However, I do know that there was constant migration between Wilkinson County, MS to Concordia, East & West Feliciana and Pointe Coupee Louisana parishes. I'm not sure if Wilkinson Co. had a local census for either 1865/1866. You may want to check nearby Adams County, MS they had a local census for 1866 for Natchez.
