Author: Renee_Merrill Surnames: Barnes, Bourne, Bournes, Thompson, Shawnee Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.ethnic.afam.ms/1503/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I am the great-great granddaughter of Archie and Harriet Barnes who lived in the Monticello (Lawrence County), MS area from approx. 1848-1910s. Their son Calvin (abt 1864-abt 1930) was my great-grandfather and he married a woman named Ella (maiden name possibly "Shawnee" or something like it) and had my grandfather Lee Barnes (1909-1978). All lived in/around Lawrence County, MS Archie and Harriet lived in Lawrence County, while other relatives lived both there and in Jefferson Davis County. Archie's parents were names Samuel and Dorcas Barnes (both ~1822-~1920). I have only found information on their son Calvin, but I'm wondering if there are other children as they also had two granddaughters, Caroline and Alva Thompson, living with them during the 1900 census. The Barnes family is also connected with the Bourne(s) family. Any information on Samuel, Dorcas, Archie, Harriet, Calvin or any other family members (birth/death dates, etc.) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! KY, 12-59-111. The Smock family were Low Dutch congregants who had moved into Mercer Co. KY in the latter part of the 1700's from the Conwago Low Dutch community near Gettysburg, Pa when it folded. Thanks for sharing this. I was thinking that possibly, since the walked many of these slaves down the Old Natchez Trace from TN to Natchez, that perhaps those buyers living in Thomastown, MS or along the Trace may have purchased slaves as they passed by. The Vanarsdales did live near Thomastown and their plantation either opened onto or the Trace passed through their land. Here are some records. You may consider trying The Forks of the Road website updated by Ser Boxley. http://www.forksoftheroads.net http://www.forksoftheroads.net/spl_rpt/enslavement_dealers.htm If you are looking for enslaved ancestors, you may consider contacting the Natchez Historical Society and the Adams County Court House. They have records dating to the Spanish colonial rule era in during the time it was the Natchez District. Best of luck in finding what you are looking for. I am also a descendant of Archie and Harriett Barnes through their son Calvin (my great-grandfather). Calvin's son was my grandfather Johnny Lee Barnes. All of my family have been based in the Lawrence County area for generations and I have done extensive research on the family back to Samuel and Dorcas Barnes (in fact, was able to find the names of her parents, including her Choctaw father, and other missing siblings and children of hers). I'm also researching any connection to Bournes. Unfortuntately, my research has not given me a lot of information on Archie, Harriett, my great-grandfather Calvin and their other children, particularly any relation to Thompsons (one census showed 2 granddaughters, Caroline and Alta Thompson living with them). Can you help? I would be very grateful as I have hit a wall here. february191955, I would love to get a copy of Archie's death certificate and the names of any other children/grandchildren. Thanks so much, cousins! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It sounded as if there was a court house on site, and I am curious to know if these slave sales were actually legally recorded in the Adams Co. Court House or not? Can anyone respond? 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Renee_Merrill Surnames: Smith, Brown, Collins, Barnes Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.ethnic.afam.ms/622.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Therese, I'm not sure if you will still get this reply after so many years; I hope that you may have found your answers by now, but in the case you haven't, I do have some info for you. My mother was a Barnes and on her side, she had Smiths, Baggetts and Browns-- all from Monticello, MS--so, there is a good chance we are related! We also have Collinses in our family, so I have been researching other families trying to make connections to my own. Your grandmother Elnora L. was actually a Smith before she married Matthew Smith (unfortunately, I don't have any info on him). Her parents were Napoleon H. (aka "Pole") Smith and Rebecca J. Sutton. If you look at the 1900 census for Beat 1, Lawrence, MS, you will find Pole, Rebecca, and their 10 children, including Elnora (whom the censustaker incorrectly called "Elnarah"). She was born in Apr 1888 according to the census. In the 1910 census for Beat 2, Lawrence, MS, you will find Elnora Smith living with her brother-in-law Jesse Collins and her sister Orlena Smith Collins and their children. There were also two very young children in the household, Jesse and Mary Baggett, who are likely Elnora's, but I'm not sure. In the 1920 census for Beat 1, Lawrence, MS, Elnora is a widow living with her 3 daughters, EddieLee, Erelene, and Leila (these spellings are from ancestry.com, so may be incorrect). EddieLee is 10 years old, so it is likely that Elnora got married to Matthew and had her shortly after the 1910 census was taken. The last child, Leila, was 3 at the time of the 1920 census, so you could narrow down the date of Matthew's death to sometime between 9 months before Leila was born, and the date of the 1920 census, Jan. 20, 1920. I hope that this is helpful to you. I am still looking for a solid connection between my Barnes/Smith family and Napoleon Smith's, but I'm confident that there is one because several of his children's names were repeated in my mom's family (Napoleon had a Naposie, Orlena, and Emmitt, and my great-grandmother Ella Smith Barnes had siblings named Napossie, Arlena, and Emit -- could be a coincidence, but I don't think so). Most of these families lived near each other for decades, so I know we're in there somewhere! :-) If you get this, please feel free to contact me at my personal email address, reneemerrill@gmail.com. Peace and blessings! Renee Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
