His families line came from Tennessee. Not sure of the county, however, many HARMON slaves were moved from the South to Texas to avoid their being freed. Check the Census indexes and I'm sure you'll find many. Especially try the 1870 African American Census from Heritage Quest. It's quick to use. My husband's ggrandfather was Jourdin HARMON. Take care, Denise

This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: DABNEY, DABNER, FOSTON Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lIB.2ACE/513 Message Board Post: In 1860 Thomas Smith Gregory DABNEY had 154 slaves in Hinds County, Mississippi. His brother, Philip Augustine Lee DABNEY, also of Hinds County, had 8. Captain (Civil War rank) Frederick Yeamans DABNEY, a son of PAL DABNEY, became a civil engineer specializing in railroad construction. Captain DABNEY was born in Virginia in 1834 and was moved to Mississippi within the year. After the war he settled his family in Crystal Springs, Copiah County. In 1887-88 Captain DABNEY, as Chief Engineer for the Columbus & Western RR, was in charge of the construction of that line between Goodwater, Alabama, and Birmingham. At Dunnavant, just south of Leeds and 15 miles east of Birmingham, RR tunnels were dug through Oak and Coosa Mountains. Several reports, one claiming to be an eye-witness account, tell how Captain DABNEY arranged a steel-driving contest between his best driver, John Henry DABNEY, and a steam-powered mechanical drill. A "steel driver" pounds a steel drill into rock with a sledgehammer while his "shaker" holds and turns the drill. Once drilled, a set of holes is packed with explosives, the detonation of which blasts away some of the rock. John Henry is said to have been brought to the job from Holly Springs, Mississippi. I believe "Holly Springs" to be an error for "Crystal Springs." The contest was held just outside the east portal of Oak Mountain Tunnel. John Henry beat the steam drill, perhaps on Tuesday, September 20, 1887, then collapsed. When he came to, he said that he was blind and dying, and he called for his wife. She came and cradled his head in her lap. He did die, possibly of ventricular rupture. If this account is correct, then John Henry DABNEY was the legendary John Henry, the steel-driving man. This goes against established conventional wisdom, which places John Henry and the steam drill at Big Bend Tunnel, on the Chesapeake & Ohio RR, in 1870-72. I am confident that the conventional wisdom is wrong. The 1870 census lists a black Henry DABNEY, 20, farmer, in Copiah County. He had recently (late 1869) married Margaret. Marriage records show her as Margaret FOSTON. They are also present, as DABNER, in the 1880 census. PAL DABNEY family memors mention a slave, Henry, who was a teenager during the Civil War. I seek any information pertaining to these families and the story of John Henry.

If Julius was a Vet, he had to have gone to school somewhere...perhaps try the Vet schools in MS or nearby Universities offering veterinary degrees. Vets need to be licensed...perhaps a licensing board could be of assistance, or a local search for professional organizations dealing with Vets. If you know what city, maybe even a call to the SPCA could provide you with an old list of Drs. from around the time you're searching. Also, there should be some sort of periodical available with the names of AA doctors or professionals in the medical or veterinary fields...perhaps a trip to a local college library would help? These are merely suggestions of places to start. Good luck in your search. Peace, M
